Take the fender off the frame and weld it to the swingarm, as close to the tire as you want.

Shorter shocks plus the boogie lowering kit should do you just fine. I cant imagine you can go much lower tho...how bout a pic?

Maybe replace the shocks with struts so you don't have to worry about grinding into the fender, then you could get really, really close.

I agree, probably can't go much more than 2" without scraping the rear tire when the shocks compress. Might think about the struts like Ed said and then maybe a seat with springs for your butt.

Might sound good but then you have to make something to bolt the seat to and you lose the fender struts so no place to bolt the sissy bar to and no mount points for the pillion if you have one. You also get a goofy looking space above the fender that looks like that goofy looking HD they came out with. Then there is moving the tail light...etc......

Not as goofy as you think. Case did it (with a trailer fender), so did Strick. Too bad photopost is still down.

To me they both looked really goofy...theres something about our frames where they attach to the shock. The frame lips upward to hold the stock seat...so when they mounted the fender it went under it and kept a gap. Its not a hardtail frame we're talking about here, that slopes down and puts the seat on the fender because it doesnt have to move up and down.
just look at these...
Of course if he used the struts and made it a hardtail he'd be able to somehow mate the rear fender and seat decently. Those struts cant be good for the rear of the bike. The swingarm and associated parts are meant to flex there. Stiffing them up puts stress on other parts. of course depending on how much HUGE bumps you hit and the riders weight.

I have a set of 10.5 inch flat black struts I made and will give you if you want them. I had them on for 3000 miles and couldnt take it anymore! My response to that was my die grinder with a cutting wheel to the stock shocks. Rides MUCH better now. I would suggest that instead of fixed struts, but if you want em, there yours! (you'll have to wait until next week when I get back to NC)

I saw those pix and I thought it looked goofy, the space over the fender didn't belong in my opinion. But that's my taste and we all have different taste that's why all our bikes look different.

10 3/4 inches center to center with no load. Doesnt rub anywhere even when 2 up riding and is MUCH better than those painful struts I made (even though they loked pretty BA!) I love pulling the cutting wheel out!

Curtis, I agree, some pics of what you're working with would be great.
I think the only way that you will get the fender as close as you're describing is to mount it to the swing arm or bolt some pieces to make it rigid.
If you go the rigid route, let me know if you want to get rid of your brackets.

A big problem with bobbing our fenders is that they look a bit weird if you dont lower them. I think this is because the fender doesnt exactly follow the same radius of the rear wheel. It sorta flattens out a bit at the top for the pillon to sit on and then curves down. So when you cut the curve off you just have a fender sticking out and leaving alot of room from the tire. Heres a pic with 2 rear fenders in it. Of course the hardtail looks better (to me at least)

Nice, I like what you've done so far. Recently I picked up some used (slightly? if at all?) 11.5 progressive shocks from e-bay for $70. They ended up being $95 with shipping but it's a lot cheaper than new. You can get another inch or so lower by doing similar. If you don't want to do that, you can have them cut two inches by a place like this: http://www.skullenterprises.com/shocks.htmlby the way, where did you get your brackets? Also, if you're going to get a set of progressives, be sure to pick some up with the heavy duty springs. Otherwise you may be rubbing the tire quite a bit. The light duties are MUCH softer than our stock shocks.

Alright here is basically what I did. Takes all of 15 minutes(SHOCKS OFF THE BIKE, OF COURSE!) be careful when cutting the springs that you dont nick the inside cylinder as it is full of fluid! VERY Easy job. Hope this helps... [image [/image

Can this really be done on our stock shocks? If so I'm going to the garage. Someone chime in before I make a big mistake.

Yup, I just did this tonight. I basically took off enough coils to maked the shocks just under 10.5 inches center to center. It definately wont ride like stock. But thats ok, I wanted low. Now all I need is those hard bags. I had it out for about 30 miles tonight afterwards and never dragged a pipe ( have Scepters ) But didnt do any severe cornering, just some medium stuff. Havent tried 2 up yet but dont think Sonya will like it now. ( its definately harsher on the bumps ) Mark

Theres a couple things you might wanna check out before riding too much more with it that low. Check the clearance of the chainguard and fender..thats a major one. Some have problems of both of those clipping each other on harder bumps. You'll have to shave the chainguard, or take it off. Another thing you'll have to watch out for is the main wiring harness going to the tail light. I dont have a taillight so i dont have a problem but ive heard others do.
Also if you have the freak kit, one of the brackets might hit the chain. I dont have the freak so i dont know about this either

Well, trimmed the chain guard immediately, and dont have a freak yet. So guess I just need to watch for the wiring harness. Other than that, love the way it looks!!!! Mark

Good job mark...Im glad I got to you before you damaged anything. Also watch for the kickstand, it scrapes on harder left turns onto crowned roads.

I did quite a bit of corning last night and I am still trying to figure out why i never dragged a pipe, cuz those scepters arent exactly short!!! The bike had been down on both sides before I bought it, so maybe they are scared and move out of the way when they see the road coming at them now, who knows LOL Mark

I chopped mine to 10 3/4 installed and I dont have any issues. Yeah, maybe a bit rougher, but not bad at all.

I have progressive 412s They're exactly 2" shorter then stock. I don't have the box that they came in but it's at my shop. I'm sure I could get the part # if necessary. I slammed my bike 2" front and rear and the only thing I've scraped was my kick stand a couple times while 2 up riding.

I haven't mounted the lights yet. I 'm messing around with a square piece of aluminum. Thinking about drilling a 1" hole through the center, slicing just off center then pinning to bars via set screws. This would give me a small clean block to polish up right between the risers. Drill that puppy for four tiny electronics leds and I picture a real cool sleek set-up. Or,I just noticed a real cool bar mounted set in JP cycles to do exactly what I need.
