How much rotational play is acceptable before replacing the cush drive? Maintenance manual says "Check for wear". How much?
Thanks

I don't know what's an acceptable level but I can feel mine now so in my judgement it's due for replacement.

I just installed a new one and there is ZERO "play". That is ideal.

Did you use the one from a Thunderbird or the one listed for your bike?

Just curious, how many miles did you have before you replaced it. Did you go with the stk one or TBS

I "shimmed up" my original at around 18000 miles. Used approx. 1/4 worth of shimming by adding pieces of truck tire sidewall x 5 pieces. Installed new TBS cush drive at 30k miles. Fits gudentite!

IMO zero play is the correct amount. Consider that the updated part fits extremely tight with absolutely no discernable play. Any play or slop in this area is not a good thing. If you see any movement just replace it and forget about it for a couple of years.

Ordered for TBS, 2 weeks away. Same price as Speedmaster in stock, $92.23 CAD, not expensive.

Might be worth calling Triumph of North Georgia. Great service and a BA.COM discount! Bought mine about two weeks ago for around $67.00 plus a few bucks shipping. International charges might raise the cost a bit. Their # is 770-205-4435

Cost are only 25 bucks apart, shipping would probably take up the better part of that by USPS, UPS would be more than that.

OK, what's it feel like when there is play in it?

The T bird cush drive rubbers are the best ones to fit, they are real tight to get in there but when fitted 100% better than the speedy or america ones. never mind if you have already renewed them, there will always be next time.

I just checked mine while remounting the tire at 29,000 plus odd miles, and there is virtually NO slop in it that I can feel. Make sure you are measuring the slop between just the sprocket assembly and the rim, and no drivetrain slop. I was surprised to say the least after reading these posts. I just grabbed the sprocket with one hand and the rim (around the hub) by the other and tried rotating the sprocket back and forth.

Thats exactly what I did. I put a piece of masking tape across both, drew a black line with a marker, sliced it a the splint line, rotated it and took a measurement. Mine has approx 3/16th of an inch movement

ya don't have to grab the rim. Let the sickle be on its sidestand, friction will hold the wheel. Grab the rear sprocket and try to rotate it back and forth.
