Yep 10 months old and the cdi that is on, looks like it is down, so for a bike that is 4 years old in July I will be on my 4th igniter. All I have to do now is convince Triumph to replace it for me for free

Unfortunately guys when it gets repaired I will be trading it in for something else, probably not a Triumph..

I have had just about had enough of the problems with the America, just coming upto 13000 miles...

Don't listen to him, it's the drink talking!

What you thinking of getting mate?

BTW, take them fancy Nology coils off before trading it in eh?

Wait a minute here, Ray!!! This'll be your FOURTH set of igniters you say???

You've GOT to be kidding me!!!

(hey...are you folks around here absolutely SURE that we're correct whenever we reply to that ofttime derisively asked question from others with..."No! It DOESN'T have any Lucas parts on it, smarta$$!")

Not like in the US.
'They' tried to introduce some but I don't think it ever caught on as such.
Consumer rights say the product should be fit for purpose.
If it's broken with 12 months (unless it specifically states on the item) it should be replaced free.

Now, rotors, don't get me started on rotors!!

ahem...I don't think their climate is right for growing citrus over there, Mark!!!

(okay...sorry)

ACTUALLY...if it were ME, I think I'd ride over to Hinckley and DEMAND to speak to somebody about this issue and TELL 'EM that THEY better pick up the tab on a new one for ya!!!

(of course, being a crass american I could get away with demandin' stuff over there ya know Ray...maybe YOU should just "ask" to speak to the gentleman in charge of their electronic systems procurement department instead, ol' boy!)

Has the pick up gap been reduced after any of these ignitor events?

It seems to me that there is more going on here than meets the eye. Either something is killing the igniter or it really isn't at fault. I suspect that there might be a bad connection someplace that is causing high voltage spikes in the electrical system.

I'd have to see that myself this time around, shop rules aside. 0.8mm and not a skosh more, and then check to insure you've been getting the proper ignitors as there are two different models.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble, first thing that came to my mind was the pick up gap as well when I read you initial post. 16,000 miles on mine so far and no issues. Just adjusted my valves and when I pulled my spark plugs even those looked perfect and I put them back in. That's right my spark plugs have 16,000 miles on them and about to get more.

I believe your dealership employs parts changers as opposed to diagnosticians.

The other place to look hard at in this scenario would be the coils, an aftermarket coil with a poor ground could be a contributing fault.

Swopped the CDI over onto Mals bike and it run only on one cylinder, so confirmed the CDI has gone.

Triumph are willing to replace this out of goodwill, but have stated if it goes again they will not. So this leaves in the position do I keep it and hope it will not go again or trade the bike in.

The dealer has offered me £3300.00 trade in against a 2008 EFI speedy, but they want the america put back to standard. But do I buy another Triumph????

I'm surprised that Triumph isn't willing to work with you.
I'm on my 3rd, all repalced free of charge and Triumph has extended my warranty. If I was you I would be sending letters to everyone's address I could find with "Manager or customer relations" attached to it.

The problem I have got in the UK is that the retailer I purchased the bike from has lost the Triumph dealership, as Triumph pointed out today my argument is with them not Triumph themselves. This to me has been a fault from the word go or since I purchased the bike new in 2004, by the time the warranty had run out I had already gone through two CDI units. Triumph replaced the last one and of course this one. Think I will keep my mouth shut until I at least receive the CDI through the new dealership.

Telephoned Trading Standards who said with an ongoing fault I have six years to make a claim. So I telephoned the dealer and asked to speak to the manager who is on holiday for two weeks, so I asked whoever was in charge to ring me.

Got a phone call from a director who agreed it is down to them and suggested a new wiring harness to start off with. So I can keep my baby and the little Honda as well.

I'm overjoyed and celebrated with a cigar

I just hope they can make it right for you, sucks to see someone get turned off to their bike because of an ongoing fault. I really have grown attached to my Speedmaster much to my suprise, I never thought I would like a bike as much as some of my antiques. Good luck and heres to hoping they figure it out in short order!

Will they include the pick up coil, regulator and alternator stator, too? I mean if you're going to "wholesale" the wiring harness, why not go all the way? Then they'd be certain to have eliminated every probability. In any event, sounds like you're on the way to success, have another cigar...

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

Good luck sorting it out. Three igniter failures is insane! Definitely go with a new wire harness. Must be gremlins in it somewhere!

I would be 99 per cent sure that some alteration you have done to the stock system is the root cause of your problem
