I know some people put thier bikes in nuetral when waiting at a red light. Yeah yeah I know you like to rest your left hand, its more comfortable, you look cooler with your left hand down reving the motor with the right blah blah blah.
Well I saw a guy on a snortster almost get clobbered from behind doing that yesterday. Guy was sitting at light (being cool). Light changed. While guy was fumbling around to get it in first,Cage behind him started to go.Luckily the cage realized the bike wasnt moving and lock them up just in time to stop about an inch short of the snortie's back tire.
Yeah the cager had his head up his rectum. But those are the types we have to watch out for. In this case a little defensive tactic would have prevented a near miss that could have been a hard hit.
I'll get off my soap box now.
The percentage you're paying is too high-priced
While you're living beyond all your means
And the man in the suit has just bought a new car
From the profit he's made on your dreams

Some time ago, someone posted a link to a securitycam tape on utube showing a rider on a sportbike at a redlight. They had the bike out of gear, left foot on the ground and right foot on the brake. Suddenly started bouncing the bike back and forth, right foot on the ground, kick the shifter, bounce back to upright, gone splatted on the front of the cage coming up behind and running the light.

I leave my bike in neutral at the lights...not for the cool but for the rest...ok and the cool as well . I got caught once last year, day dreaming...yeah I know ...lethal! A combination of that and not being able to select a gear, not being ready because I wasn't watching the intersecting traffic stop thus leaving me immobile as the lights changed. I felt lucky to get away with it. I now select 1st with plenty of time before the light changes...Now lane splitting is a different story. Cagers are sometimes offended and try to race me at the lights...pfft! too slow loser
...yes, that is a single seat...no, I will not put the other seat on...yes, I am selfish...yes, you should buy your own bike

It is tempting to put in neutral as nice to be able to use both hands or just rest the left. I haven't done it much and the MSD course stresses to always stay in 1st for the fast exit when needed. Your hand will have lots of time to rest later if you get squashed.

Yup, one near miss years ago convinced me to keep it in first, check the rear view and have an escape route ready. SteveB

Can somebody translate? I didn't get all that. I mean, I got the overall gist of it. But the route from point A to point B is a little foggy.
The only time I risk putting it in neutral in traffic is if I'm surrounded by stopped vehicles and only if my hand is killing me. But I still watch the light and the mirrors and put it in gear just before the light changes so I'm ready.
