I have a potential job offer at the Cherry Point Marine base. I have never been to this area, anyone know whats its like? Housing, crime, weather? Most importantly, whats the riding like???

Thanks

Man that's the coastal Carolina area just west of the Outer banks, it's pretty much fantastic. What's not to love?

Thats what i was thinking, I googled maped it, and it looks to be a great place to ride. Of course the OL is more interesed in unimportant stuff like "cost of living", "crime rates", "housing cost", and other silly stuff like that....

A quick Google reveals: Nearby in the town of Havelock the number of violent crimes recorded by the FBI in 2003 was 40. The number of murders and homicides was 0. The violent crime rate was 1.7 per 1,000 people. Craven County dot Com
Dude, it's coastal Carolina, grab the chance while you can.

+1 I love that area. New Bern, Oriental, Morehead City, Wilmington, anywhere on the Outer Banks. Not many hills there, but plenty of places to go, things to see, and roads to ride.

Well, if I had some time to geezer up the NC coast, here's what I'd do. This won't be an exhaustive list of things to do, and it won't have cool maps or stuff like that because I'm not that savvy.

I'd start in Wilmington, and maybe go tour the USS North Carolina because battleships are pretty cool. I'd definitely go east to walk down memory lane on Wrightsville Beach for one afternoon and evening. Do the Wrightsville stumble from Clarence Fosters to Buddy's to the Raw Bar, and end up back at Red Dogs (especially if UNCW is in session).

From their website, Back Roads Triumph in Jacksonville has always looked like a cool bike shop...might be worth a stop.

From there, head up toward New Bern. Stop by Fort Macon (very cool), the NC Aquarium, and the Maritime museum (never been to either one of those, but want to). Take a look at Tryon Palace, AKA Tyrone's Place by my dyslexic ex.

Ferry over to Ocracoke, and ferry up to Hatteras (I think that's where it goes). Follow 12 up the outer banks and take pictures of all the lighthouses. Get sand on my feet and just listen to the surf for a little while. See the wild ponies on Corolla island.

Next thing you know, you're out of NC and on to Virginia Beach and Williamsburg.

If I researched it a little more, I'm sure I'd see things that I forgot about. I've never had a bike out there, and don't know any specific roads to hit...but kind of like I've never really played a bad golf course, I've never really ridden on a truly bad road on the bike.

I'm jealous of you guys and the geezer tour.

Hateras Lighthouse, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk are on that path through the outer banks, so is Blackbeard's treasure. Eat at Sam and Omie's for awesome seafood.

It depends on your point of view. Having lived in the coastal NC area most of my life there dosent seem to be all that much to do or be all that special. I suppose crime is lower than lots of other area's but there's still a plenty. Summer's are hot and humid and winter cold and wet generally. And a over abundance of flying blood sucking varmits. Mosquitos the size of small aircraft. Other than than. The waters fine. Jump in...

That's a pretty good point. I lived in Raleigh for a few years, but I'm still looking at the coastal area of NC through a tourist's eyes, not from a residential perspective. I do love visiting that area though.

Exactly. I too live on the cost of the Atlantic Ocean. EVERY time I ride North I ride in the Mountains. Departing from Florida there is a lot of flat land on the way to those mountians. This NH Rally trek should be quite the cats meow. Off the beaten path so to say. Local eateries and unknown sites are always on the long list!

P.S.: Will, thanks for the recommendations. Loads of ideas you offered! (I really need to start cutting and pasting to MS Word.) You too Ed for the eateries you mentioned.
