Will it hurt rubber? Like tires?

It shouldn't since the diaphram is rubber too. I have used it many times, I just dont like the white residue it leaves behind.

How bout carb cleaner?
Reason I'm asking is I have my rear wheel off to put the new sprocket on. It's dirty... Big time. I figure those two should take brake dust off well.

Carb cleaner should not affect rubber either, but it might de grease your bearings so you might want to watch that. If you have the wheel off anyway, spray it with some Simple Green and take a sponge to it, but its a de greaser too, so watch the bearings. But it works good. The best thing I've used is Megiuars chrome wheel cleaner, it takes the nasty right off.

Thanks. I need to run out and grab a couple things anyway, so I may pick up some maguires. Save my brakleen for the chain goo.

Brakekleen for brakes. Kerosene for what you want to do. Less expensive is all. That and a parts cleaning brush. You can go through a tin of brakekleen really fast. Say one caliper and it is over. on the other hand a gallon of kerosene will last you a year. Wally world has brakekleen and Prestone DOT 4...
Local gas stations have the Kerosene.

Got kerosene at the Lowes yesterday. Still some white stuff on the inside of the plates of the chain, but overall its much cleaner. I got the round part the sprocket bites on pretty clean, and let the chain lube soak in good before I wiped it down.
