So I'm cruising down I-64 in my truck and heading home after supporting my local Triumph dealer in the form of a purchased can of chain lube when up ahead I see a trike. Something's different about it; the rear wheels are actually smaller than normal wheels on a motorcycle. This peaks my interest and I speed up for a better look. As I get closer I realize it's not a trike due to now I can see the motorcycle's rear wheel. I'm also noticing a trailer hitch between these secondary wheels. So now I'm thinking it's a bike towing a small trailer.
I get up on the right side of him to pass by (my exit is coming quick), and there's no trailer at all. I didn't get a great look, but it really seemed to look like a set of training wheels (on steroids) for a motorcycle. The two wheels looked like one complete assembly and moved independent of the bike when hitting bumps. It may have been a trailer just big enough for a cooler or something. But this was one weird piece.
Anyone heard or seen something like this?

Yep seen quite a few of them, been around for years now, To me a lame idea, either you have a real trike or a motorcycle not a bike with training wheels. Never had my hands on one but I could maybe see it for long trips to haul a bunch of stuff if it was a quick detach kind of thing, soyou could get where you are going and lose the extra wheels.

One particular kit is called the Voyager kit. It is essentially a set of training wheels. They are nothing more than stabilizers ( and a trailer hitch ). A couple of the older PGR in my area installed them as a much cheaper option than a true trike.

Training wheels?
There used to be a regular at the Tulare run that had a Sportster with 3 wheels in back. This was a bolt on kit and the original center wheel was the only one powered. The center tire was always bald from spinning when it was lifted off the ground by the other two.

Thanks fellas. I looked up that Voyager kit and that's pretty much exactly what I saw. Sorry if I offend anyone, but what a load of crap. I agree Ian, either full blown trike or motorcycle, no in between. PLUS, they want over $4K for those things. Go over to my uncle's workshop and with some of the stuff laying around and a few minutes welding I could build my own.

Actually there ment for older riders who cannot handle two wheels anymore. Keeps people riding who want to. I know a couple of guys with arthritis in there hips so they cant lift the bike off the stand. So is it lame?? Naaa I got to tell you that I would do just about anything to keep riding even if it looks a bit "lame"

I agree with that, I would do it in half a heart beat if it was the only way to keep riding.

All points well made. What I briefly reviewed from the website didn't seem to market the kits to an older crowd. Cheers all.

I remember an advertiser in Wing World many years ago that offered powered training wheels. At a preset speed, they lifted up into the saddlebags. Invisible. They dropped into place only when you slowed down.
