Hi guys - I've lurked for a while here and decided to join/post/contribute. I am going to pull the trigger on a new bike, and have the choice of a 2008 America/Speedmaster or a 2005 America, new (never sold) at about $2,000 MSRP. I would get the warranty either way, but I'm curious about your thoughts. Some of mine:
Is the power substantially different from the 2005 to the 2008? I know the engine grew in 2007. Did this make a big difference?
How much would I wish for the adjustable clutch and brake (also new in 2007)? I'm a tall guy, so maybe not much.
Should I worry about a 2005 that is still around unsold? I would get the warranty so maybe not, but it seems strange to me that a dealer still has this.
How negotiable are the prices on the new bikes?
Thanks for your opinions.
Greg

I bought a 2003 BA in 2004 that had been on display in a department store for 18 months. The warrantee was the same, the price was lower and by the time I sell it the actual model year won’t matter.
I’d want to know why it was still unsold but if there is no reason to think there was a problem I’d grab it.

I would jump on the older America and save the $2,000. You get the older better looking tank that you can swap badges on to boot.

Personally, I would go with the America. Still, you should see about a test ride on both and buy the one that feels best to you. There is a big difference in the riding position and you want the one that fits you personally.

For $2,000 savings you could buy drag bars and risers and even a gunfighter seat and still have cash left to party!

IMO, get the 2008.
Now, where can I find that 2005? :-)
Seriously, like others said, the '05 saves the cash that you can spend on many great extras...

Is that $2000 of the 2005 MSRP? I believe the MSRP of the bike in 2005 was $7499. So, $5499 for a "new" bike with full 2-year warranty is a steal. Ask the question.

Good point, I just assumed (and you know what assuming does) you meant $2,000 off the 2005 price. Still if you save $2,000 off the 2008 price (I don't know what that is off hand) and it is at least some off the 2005 price you still have a net savings of $2,000 and still have a "new" bike with a 2 year warranty and the old more stylish tank. But in the end it is your call of course and you should get what will make you happy in the end, nothing wrong with the 05 if that was part of your thinking.

Thanks guys. It's about $2k off the new bike price. So not really $2K off (the '05 price), but that's the net effect of it. I'll go check it out tomorrow, and will likely pick it up. Now between this bike and my Mini, people are going to think I'm a wanna-be Brit!
So is there no noticeable difference in power with the '07 engine displacement increase?

Personally I would try to squeeze every last penny out of the dealer on the '05. He's had that bike for three model years, I'm sure he would love to move it out. see if he will throw in three oil changes, some chrome goodies and a nice Triumph jacket, maybe a helmet. Yea I know that sounds like a lot but keep in mind we are 4 months from the '09 model release. What the heck all he can say is no. Best of luck,Mike

I used to own a Morris Minor. Does that count??? By the way, I'd pick the '05.

05 America has spokes too! 790 engine which is a perfect candidate for the 904 kit. I could go on and on...

Get the 05, you wont look back. It has the better looking tank, and the savings are nice, as mentioned, to put accessories on the bike.
I bought a 04 Speedmaster in 06, new, no miles, and have not second guessed the decision once. The discount was about $2K off, and the $500 goody deal was on at the time and they gace me that, all in goodies, an installed for free...real nice dealer.

You definetly would hope so. Especially since the dealer mostlikly paid "05" prices.

This makes me wonder how many more "leftovers" there are out there, and where, and how does one find them?
