In the spirit of trying to do everything on my bike myself, even though I'm a clueless f*ckwit I decided to learn to weld.

I wanted to widen an old Harley bobber fender to fit my TBA.

I learn't that:

Never grab the welding wire straight after welding IT'S HOT!

Do not pick up the piece of metal you have just welded, IT'S HOT!

Do not pick up the piece of metal you just grinded smooth, IT'S HOT!

Wear a long sleeve top, weld spatter is HOT!

Do not wear a T-shirt, angle grinder sparks are HOT!

Don't wear trainers, the peice of metal you just cut of, which fell in between your sock and your trainer is HOT!

Off to the burns unit now for the evening.

So what did you learn today

If you do your welding outside in the rain, it will quench all those hot things so you don't get burnt as easily....

I forgot my personal favorite.

Don't sit on the end of your welding torch when you've just finished the weld. IT'S HOT!

So anybody else learn anything useful today?

I'm sorry Si......I've just laughed so loud I think the neighbours might think I'm just slightly mad....

I can only imagine it's like picking up a pair of tongs in the chemistry lab...the ones I'd used to burn some metal in a bunsen flame....they're hot too.

Don't try and pick up a wood stove by yourself, they are very heavy! I pulled something today trying to load one on my trailer. I got it on there but I also learned I'm not 18 anymore!

I didn't learn this one today, but it's worth repeating.

True welding story.....from several years ago...

One of our welders at work was using a plasma cutter to trim some metal. For some still-unknown reason, he decided he needed both hands free for a moment so he stuck the gun in his pocket. Yes, it was still hot.....

Can I stand well back when I'm working on something please.

Anyway, the suns shining, the burns are healing so it's time to go finish that welding.

P.s. There is now more weld than there is fender

I know exactly what you mean, I had to drag one from my garage out to my shop winter before last. Really enjoyed it once it was there and setup, but it wasn't much fun getting it there.

Weldings finished, learnt a new one. If you use an angle grinder on the inside of a fender. The fender acts a little like a directional funnel. It is exactly the right shape, to direct grinder sparks around you and deposit them straight into your builders bum cleavage. Guess what, they are really HOT!
