I might try a slightly longer bolt. See my "5mm" post. I felt something similar to the one towrds the back wheel while doing the change out. I put in a 45mm instead of a 40mm bolt and it grabbed fine and set all the way in. Not sure if that will fit on the front one but it might be worth a try before having to do a helicoil or something.

I know it's a case of locking the stable door after the horse has bolted, but you're screwing those bolts into aluminium - they have a very low torque setting, barely more than "nipped up" really. I don't think those bolt holes go all the way through so using a longer bolt will only work if there's enough clearance for it. To fix it the RIGHT way you need to take the cover off completely, measure the wall thickness of the hole, and if there's enough clearance tap and fit a helicoil. That's a lot of work though, so go with airguy's suggestion of a 5mm longer bolt first - I think there's one in the the sprocket cover, so you could "try before you buy".

I agree Matt. I just thought the longer bolt might work without the large amount of work to do it the "right" way. Worked for me. I know aluminum strips out just by looking at it the wrong way sometimes and I think I did it myself thinking I was being careful. Should have just got out the torque wrench in the first place.

Mike, try a 5mm longer bolt. Your local hardware store should have a ss one in stock somewhere. If that doesn’t work, you'll have to pull the LH cover. First dropping the foot bar, then the left slip on, till you can get to all the bolts. Careful about the starter gear shaft. It will slip loose and has a spring washer on it. The LH Cover gasket is around 9 bucks. Buy several and buy a RH cover gasket while you are ordering the LH cover gasket(s). Downloads courtesy of bonnevilleamerica.com Scroll down to page bottom. bonnyusa (Phil) compiled a set of torque values waaaay back when! Ryan's 9Nm is spot on. (6.633 FtLbs)

But did you know that the Speedmaster has a different torque value for these bolts. probably cause thre BA has chrome covers and our SM have black. I found that fairly odd in my manual.

Then its minus 9Nm
As for stripping the thread - I would get the thing helicoiled - better to be safe. Also it seems that when I loosened a few of these bolts they all seemed to be loctited in - probably have to be at such a low torque.

Ok nadsters, per my Official Triumph Service Manual T3850902 Issue 9, 11.2002 page 5.8 Installation note 6, Quote:
Install the clutch cover bolts in their original locations, ensuring the clutch cable mounting bracket is correctly positioned. Tighten all bolts hand-tight then go around and tighten to 9 Nm (all except Speedmaster) or 12 Nm (Speedmaster).
So there!

Gee Pat, so you think it's a good idea to have a service manual before wrenching on these bikes? What a concept!

Is there anyone out there who has done a helicoil in this area? Doesn't seem to be much room to do it, and what about the clutch cover? Will the existing bolt hole except the next larger size? That is why I haven't done it.
Ride Safe.
