I've burned out 2 Ford Rangers, Totaled one last fall, found a used one to replace that one cheep. Just called my mechanic, he says no compression on cylinder 1, bad valve or crank.......so it looks like I will be checking out Chevy (spit) S-10's this weekend.
Have a nice day.

Awe. I work for Ford, and I am sorry to see you go. I can tell you that there is something on the horizon for Ranger.
Good Luck.

I have a 4 cylinder 1995 S-10 that's just gone over 182k. Dependable, cheap transportation. Wish I still had my 1962 F-100 Econoline tho....

I'm certainly one of those that hopes you'll give Ford another chance. My 2002 F-150 just went over 101K and I really haven't had anything major go wrong with it. My girlfriend recently bought a used Mustang GT (2003 with 14K miles) and is in complete love with it. If all goes well, we'll be keeping these vehicles (including my America) for at least the next 10 years.

So you found a used truck for real cheap and it's Ford's fault that it's not working now?

Well duh. Why should one blame the previous owner?
It's all Ford's fault!
Had a 1995 F150 (until fall of 05 when I bought the 04 Dakota) and it was the best truck I ever had. Too bad gas prices precluded me from keeping it. That 302 was one smooth running motor!!

I had a Ford Ranger also that blew a head gasket. But in fairness, I don't feel it was Fords fault. I had a crappy mechanic here in Dahlonega, Ga. that wasn't doing the work I paid him to do, and even though I can't prove it, I think that is why the truck died.
But at present I do have an S10, 2002 quad cab that I am absolutely thrilled with. Haven't had any problems with it at all. I also had a 97 S10 Blazer that was a great car also.
Happy car shopping, Paw.

Been a Chevy man as long as I can remember and love them but I did have an 88 F-150 4X4 with the 300 6 in it with std shift. It was a good truck if you had really wanted a car. We drove it all over (I owned it because it was junked to me with only 72,000 on it with a bad break line and 1 broken leaf spring) It was a good car never gave me any trouble but when loaded it wandered all over the road. Don't know if Ford ever fixed it but they tended to give up carrying capacity for ride. I could put as much as I wanted in my 85 Chevy and it drove the same minus some excelleration when it was really heavy.

Hmmm.... Fords I've had.....
'35 coupe 239 59A engine '41 tudor 286 59L engine '63 Galaxy 500XL, 390 V8 '68 ranch wagon, 390 V8 (I think) '64 F100 351 V8 '77 cougar XR-something or other, 351 V8 '88 wagon, 302 V8
Every last one ran hot. The flatheads had to be rebuilt every summer. The monkey-motion engines didn't last as long as my ironhead Sportster between overhauls and the autoshifter gearboxes didn't even last that long. There is someone who works with the OL that has a new Ford Towus. It's a good thing they live in town because it goes into overheat mode just as they get to work.
On the other hand, I've owned a number of MoPars beginning with the '52 Plymouth I traded the '41 for, and had no major problems with them. Currently, the lineup of 4 wheelers I have are: '51 Plymouth '69 D100 '03 D1500 V8 '07 W2500 Cumins '07 PT '07 John Deere

My Honda Element had 206,000 plus when I sold it last Nov (had it four years ), the new has 28,000 now. My first Honda, a 86 Prelude Si had 157,000 when I sold it, the 92 Accord EX Coupe had 134,000 when sold, and the 95 Prelude Si had 155,000 when sold. All got new and no troubles with any of them.
My 81 VW Scirocco had 145,000 when I sold it ( trouble free, was broadsided ),my 84 Rabbit had 171,000 and the latest, a 2001 Jetta 1.8 Turbo has only 28,000 ( I use my company vehicles mostly, now ). All trouble free.

Please tell me it's not going to "get bigger" like everything else... There's no such thing as a compact truck anymore! Even a Tacoma is big now!!! My buddy in St Paul MN lives a few blocks from the Ford Parkway where the Ranger factory is! Lots of white ones in the parking lot...

I have bought just one Ford in my life and it will remain that way. My SportTrack's transmission went bad right after the warranty expired. Yes we had to put a new transmission and since then no other major problems, but this just ****** me off too badly. 4 yrs, a new transmission after just 4 fraking years! The tow truck guy who according to him used to work for Ford told me that its a common problem for Furd's trucks... I wish I would have bought the Tundra instead.

The tow truck guy was wrong. Ford has their transmissions down to a science, and 04 sporttrack is no exception. Unfortunately you got one of the ones which fall somewhere out in the tail of the normal distribution of the statistics. I'm sorry for you and glad that (for once) it wasn't me. I hope that your reman unit lasts forever and you never have even so much as a headlamp failure. Look on the bright side, it could have been your bike. Serenity now!

S-10, great truck! Just sold mine a few months back. Wasn't impressed with the 4.3 Vortec. If you don't need that large of an engine, I suggest the 4 cyl.

Never had heating problems. And, they were all in Vegas. All went well over 100K (over 200K on the Taurus and Windstar) before I got something else.

Yeah that has me thinking too..
As for it being Fords fault well My first Ranger was an 88 beat that thing into the ground no complaints....the 2nd was a 95 that blew up. The third was a 99 lets see that popped a ball joint (but not what caused the wreck) alternater went after 50,000 miles bunch of nickle and dime stuff. Then t-boned at an intersection (no not fords fault). The last one was also a 99....I detect a trend.

I have owned 2 Ford Rangers. The first was a bare minimum that was my first truck. Not bad, but the dealership was never very helpful when it came to repairs or service (way over priced as I learned later). 2nd truck was an upgraded model. Bad sales experience at the dealer (different dealer), and after less than a year of ownership, the transmission went bad at 40K miles and Ford wouldn't do anything. I have moved on to Toyota for everything now and haven't had 1 problem since (60,000 miles ago). I tend to keep things for a long time and respect companies that put pride into their products. How many times is Ford going to say that they have changed things around?

I'm on my second Ranger. It's a no frills (although XLT) 2.3L, regular cab, 5 speed. 30 MPG on the highway. I wouldn't want to tow anything with it, but it'll haul anything I need to (including the bike). It's a pig getting up to speed and I'm thankful VA is "relatively" flat. I'll continue to own Rangers myself, but I had a bad experience with Ford's warranty policy at two locations.
Move on to next post now, or continue for partial thread hijack (sorry).
I had a problem with the inertia switch on my current Ranger. Switch cuts off electronic fuel pump at impact or roll-over. I'd be idling at a light or stop sign and the engine would die. The truck would not restart. Reach under the dash on the passenger side, press the inertia switch reset button and off I'd go for a couple of weeks before repeating this cycle.
I drive 163 mile to and from work every week and don't need an inertia switch tripping at 80 MPH on the highway.
Two Ford dealerships would not replace the switch on a vehicle that was less than 4-months old and under warranty as they could not reproduce the problem and would not take my word for it. Understandable to some extent. So, I waited for the problem to occur during my days off, had Geico pay for a hook to the dealership, so the mechanic could reset the switch himself. They still would not replace it (Battlefield Ford in Manassas and Freedom Ford in Hampton, VA). Bought and replaced the part myself (think it was $17) and never had a problem since. I did notice the new part came with a shield that covers the switch, where the old part did not have one.
So ..... I'm not entirely sold on Ford's warranty process.
Regards,
Tom

A friend of mine has a 96 Explorer... same problem... 4yrs bam transmission gone. The tow truck guy sounded knowledgeable and seemed to know what he was talking about, he gave me no reason not to believe him. Doesn't matter since the damage is done and I'll never buy another Ford. If I ever buy American again it'll most likely be Chevy, always wanted to have a 'vette.

Funny you mention buying American... I drive a Charger (3.5, not a Hemi) for work, and altho I really do like it, I admit I don't pay for service and I can get a rental thru work if it's in the shop for a few days.... like it was for a while week while they replaced the valve lifters at 50k. 3 sets of brakes too, they warp real easily. Also a steering pump... Thing rides great, eats up highway like it's twinkies, but the guy at the Firestone shop (Who I'm on a first name basis with now) says he is seeing a LOT of Crysler products coming thru the door lately. Lots of brakes and steering problems. I had a Jeep Liberty before that which only went thru a couple O2 sensors, but another coworker has one with 80K on it that is on a reman-tranny and he says it's creeking and moaning a lot. Granted we put like 30 to 40K a year on these things in the NY metro area, so it might as well be offroading ALL the time. We beat em... But just food for thought.
My wife has a Focus 3 door (the Skittle she calls it) that only had one weird gremlin when she first got it. Something about the alarm and remote starter weren't getting along well, and it would just NOT start. Stranded her in MA for a couple days. After that got worked out, it's been fine. Too bad they don't make the hatches anymore! I guess Ford's model decisions is a whole different discussion!!!

I know that the Exploders had tranny problems, but many OD trannys seemed to have problems at one time the early Durangos had tranny problems too, not sure if it's been fixed yet or not. As a towing operator you tend to see trends and when you tow a bunch of 1 kind of vehicle for the same issue you see a pattern. People will still argue with you and say it isn't so, Nissan Pulsar and Sentra had really bad trannys in the 80s.

Well, might as well buy a Toyota or Nissan. They've got just as much domestic content and labor(or MORE) as Chevy, Ford or Dodge, and last I checked still had good reps for quality. And since they're both traded on Wall St., you're even helping out American investors.

Got acouple of Fords right not. Problems with them would be minor but the unwillingness of the dealer to repair the problems makes the situations worse. Usually have to take the vehicle back 3 times before they repair it properly. I have even taken in paper copies of Fords TSB's to get them to repair things. A there were a few things that suddenly could be repaired after the warranty expired. The transmission failed right after the warranty expired, had been in for that 3 times prior. Sent a strongly worded letter to all the key managers and owner of the dealership and every complaint I had was repaired free of charge including the transmission.
I've vented, I feel better now.

I've had my share of Ford trucks and I liked most of them until they got to 100K miles or so and then all kinds of trouble. Ball Joints, transmissions, water pumps, alternators. It seems like they hold up well for a few years and then self destruct after that. Finally switched to Toyota in 2004 and I'm not going back.

You knew it was coming......For the most part you guys are spreading old wives tales. Ford has, and still is, making the best vehicles on the planet. No, they're not for everyone. There are still those few who still try to go into the contracting industry with their gm or dodge and repair them every other month, then whisper to eachother about their problems. Look around, contractors buy fords because their employees beat the heck out of them every day, they take it, & go back to work the next day with just routime maintenance. Go to any big job site and count them. Talk to any big contractor and they will tell you. gm and dodge won't take it and won't hold up. They try to switch every once in a while (just to pacify the automaker unions) by balancing their buying but they go back to ford. Tell me I'm wrong.

Sorry Jerry you are the one spreading stories, I have owned both Ford and GM and by far the Chevy was the better all around durable work truck. My wrecker is also a Chevy and gets worked harder than any truck ever should and never gives me any trouble just regular up keep. I also used to sub-contract building houses and had 2 Chevys that employees used, same thing never a problem that any other truck wouldn't have had too. I can direct you to several big contractors here if you want to ask them how their fleet of Chevys are holding up. In fact the one contractor my friend works for had a Ford steak body and that thing was broken more than it was running.

The fullsize truck market is far and away the most fiercly loyal market for any vehicle, even more than Harley (by sheer numbers), so anything you hear is going to be subjective, just the way it goes. Now if someone is looking at this considering buying a truck for the first time, they might find some useful info, but hey this is a bike forum! I'd go to a forum for the truck I was looking at to get some more info. This thread is more of a ****** fest than anything Which is fine! Go ahead and vent. I STILL want to know what's "in store" for the Ranger. The world needs at least one compact truck option! I don't need to haul a boat or anything, but I'd love something I could put my bike in, or even tow a small bike trailer, slide plywood into as needed, and also go offroading in. The trails I like are a bit tight for a fullsize...

Indeed, I manage a fleet of over 500 vehicles, Mostly fords, our employees drive the wheels off of these things. Some are State police cruisers which get beaten within an inch of their lives on a daily basis. The incidence of Ford transmission failures is so rare within my fleet(unlike the early 90's e4ods which were junk)and seems to be related to the operator's willingness to continue to drive the vehicle long after the transmission lines begin to leak due to the rot caused by our extensive use of salt(yeah, right around 100,000 mi). The operators show up at my garage stating the vehicle has been leaving a spot of red stuff in the driveway and the transmission is slipping. Surprise, the fluid is off the stick. I build transmissions and have been working on them for years. Ford has about the same rate of recall as everyone else, they're certainly not making an inferior product. That said, if I owned a vehicle and had the trans fail after 4 years I probably wouldn't give them another shot unless they stepped up and made some kind of offer. Don't get me wrong, I get it. I've just never had a car that was that new so trans problems are expected after I buy your old car @ about 125,000 mi. That, and I can fix it myself.

My neighbor across the street was a Ford dealer service underwriter for many years. He once told me that his philosophy was when it came to pickups that Fords had slightly stronger built frames, but that Chevys had much more reliable engines and drive trains.
For whatever it's worth, he owns a 2005 Chevy Silverado today.

Tell him he should buy a Dodge, they have a strong frame and a strong engine. Especially the Cumins.

Dodge was having tranny issues though, not sure if they straightened them out yet or not. I was not saying Chevy was unbreakable by any stretch. There are a few things I don't like about Ford suspension design and they don't seem to handle well under a load going down the highway. I like Chevy but have owned a Ford, if I have my choice it's Chevy because I have had a few and they were all very good trucks. Our current family vehicle is a 96 Silverado 4X4 with just over 120,000 trouble free miles and I ask that little 1/2 ton to do things no half ton should have to do.

My father in law who had a used car dealer told me to get a Chevy next time around, he said that they had better engines and transmissions. A Tundra is what I originally wanted but "she who must be obeyed" wanted the sport track... 4 yrs later she wished we had bought the Tundra. Next time I'll suggest the Tundra and we'll end up with an Odyssey
