Right, we all know the boys in blue are tightening up on those two wheeled reckless types. How tough are they really on the number plate size? I've started work on the rear of the bike (might even be ready for Septembers bash). I don't wanna spoil the look with a 9"x7" plate and want to go for a slightly smaller show plate. Anyone out there got any sorry tales to tell? Anyone been pulled and they haven't bothered about it?

Let me know what you think.

On the 06 I have a slightly smaller plate, but small enough to still be illegal.

Not been pulled over for it yet....but still have alegal one to put on for the first MOT next year!

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

I think mine's 6x4" and I've had no trouble with it. I was told when I bought it that it should be OK-any smaller would risk a tug. You can get an idea of the size by looking at my photos (sidevu and midbelow).

A hog-riding mate of mine has one that's even smaller (and silver-on-black) and he's had no problems, either.

I think the cops are on the lookout for sportsbikes with those tiny plates, loud cans, etc.

Just buy it, fit it and plead ignorance if caught!!!

Every so often they have a clamp down over here, especialy at race periods like NW200 or UGP, so its not worth the bother. I also dont want any hassel when I am over in the mainland so leave the standard plate on ( I take a chance on the TOR pipes ) Did you see In MCN site the bous in blue have a mobile dyno and have been pulling over 50cc mopeds to cheak their power output
good job they nothing better to do, all must be well.
My 3 lads all went through riding 50cc and they are a danger when restricted to 30MPH in my opinion.
especialy on main roads.

On the day of the meet, the Hardly rider I was talking to had just picked himself up a £30.00 fine for his small plate. It was very small though. They said the vehicle checking number plates could not read it and sent a motorcycle cop after him..

I thought that not being able to be spotted by the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system was a good idea. They are everywhere now. Little green cameras on bridges, in cars and in the back of all the speed camera vans. I looked it up, the maximum penalty is £1,000!! You probably get fined less for buralry or assault! The DVLA do NOT say how big the plate must be. They just specify the size, spacing and font of the letters.

Anybody know a country where I can live where GATSO won't follow me? Where the police spend their time seeking out criminals and not people just tryin to get from A to B?

Looks like I'll be buying two sets of plates then.

I've had a 7" x 5" plate on for quite a while now with no problems. Well, that is apart from the fact that the mounting bracket snapped on the way home from work yesterday so my number plate is now somewhere on the A22!!

Plate can be seen on one of Ray's Dent photos parked next to his bike.
