I see a few posts that might have my info, but get errors when trying to open so forgive the probable repeat questions.

03 speedmaster. I have a freak (not yet installed) and TOR shorts. I'm at about 1000 ft.

Suggestions on mains, pilots, needle, shims? Baffle removal?

Jetting calculator says around 150, freak came with 160 mains. I got the bike used, so not sure but I'm guessing the pilots are the stock 42s.

Thank you in advance!

keep the stock pilots for now, adjust the air screw for any popping. 150 mains will be a good place to start and maybe a shim or 2 on the needle. if you want max performance start here then get it on a dyno

Thanks Frank, that's about what I was thinking, but wanted to be sure. I'm not sure there is anywhere close to me with a dyno (central Ohio), but I'll check.

I'm a lower elevation and different pipes, but I started with 160 and went down to 155, so 150 is probably good. I am also running TBS needles with no shims which works really well for me, might consider that. Needles and shims are by far the easiest thing in the carbs to change, and cheap, so it won't hurt to have options.

I wouldn't shim the needles yet. Re-jet to probably 150 and with TORs you will probably be OK with the 42 pilots and opening the mixture screws. Then dyno it to fine tune. If you show a flat spot in the mid range then shim the needle if the mix is close otherwise. I wouldn't remove baffles from TORs if they are the straight through type, if they are not the straight through type then have at it but remember when you change intake or exhaust you need to change jetting to match.

Yeah, the freak is on! Of course it's raining here now, so I can't road test. Actually it's been cold and dreary all week, which makes it much easier to work on my baby.

Not too many problems, directions off in a place or two. But, I took my time and all was well. I started off w/150 Mains and didn't change anything else. I would have preferred to start with 152s or 155s, but my local parts dept didn't have 'em. We'll see...

My personal experience with the freak kit is to also pay attention to the pilot jets. Normal cruising speeds use more idle jet than main, and these bikes are set really lean from the factory. Depending on your altitude, I think 45's are a good starting point, but you need to see what you have installed first and then increase one step at a time. Also the air mixture screws can have some affect, but if you have too small pilots, you will still run too lean even with the screws wide open. A simple test is throttle response at normal highway speeds. If there is a lag when you blip the throttle, pull out your choke slightly and try it again. If the lag disappears, you're lean, and need to up the pilots a step. I just changed mine and it's like riding a whole new bike. Hope this helps. Just remember, there is no "default" setup, each bike and rider and altitude are different, you have to find what works best for you.

When I first did the Freak kit I upped the mains but left the 42s in for pilots and it was so lean it didn't even register on the dyno. Was very lean up until about 3500 to 4000 RPM if I remember right.

I recently found out my dealer replaces the pilot jets right out of the crate with 45's. Even they were too lean after the freak kit, so I put in 48's, screws to 2 1/2 turns, and she runs like a champ now. I can understand "some" emissions control, but lean like that can't be good on an engine. I can understand the confusion of someone tackling this for the first time, so many variables.

I am currently running 48s in both my bike and Wendys and it is almost too rich. I have been thinking of the 45s but have been putting it off because they both run so good. It all has to do with altitude and I think I am border line for 48s.

odiekyle, thanks for the choke tip, makes sense. It's pretty responsive above 4k, so I think I need to check. I got it out for about 10 mins today, so I also need to check the plugs. you can definitely feel a kick once it gets off the pilots and onto the mains. I'm thinking they probably need to go to 45s, but will run choke check first. Fortunately I have a local shop with jets and good prices/service.

I do wish Brent would take some input on pipes and altitude when shipping jets instead of the 160 one size to rich for all, but am happy more or less. Service was great.
