This past winter was a bit too moist in my shed...I got tiny spots of rust pretty much everywhere. Mostly my bars and risers. No pitting yet though, except for the shift leaver.

Any thoughts on what to use? I got a little palm sander with a smooth buffing pad...I was told to use mothers chrome polish, i was just wondering if theres something i should use to get the rust off before polishing.

I've used regular old chrome polish and 0000 (4 ought) steel wool. It won't scratch the chrome, but it takes the rust spots right off. I restored a 1965 BSA like that, and the original pipes turned out looking brand new! I wouldn't use any power tools, too much pressure, too long in one spot could go through the chrome layer.

I use Autosol. It comes in a black and gold tube. Works great on all metals and takes bug guts off of it too.

If you have rust, you are already through the chrome. Use a chrome polish that leaves a protective film (I think "Mother's" does that) and use it often.
Next step - rechrome.

Maas metal polish does a good job. Shines up just about any metal and it stays shiny.

Thanks alot fellas, Im gonna have to wait for a nice day and polish my arm off. Its looking like I gotta seal up my shed a bit better too, theres way too much moisture in there

Another question, what should i use to polish with?...I know it needs to be somewhat rough for the rust, but i dont wanna tear up the chrome.

I'm partial to Wenol and an old cotton sock for a polishing cloth. The ribbed elastic area works to remove grunge and the lower "foot" portion as the polsihing part. Like other polishes, Wenol leaves a nice protective film that sheds water and keeps it nice and shiney for a long time.

As far as sealing your shed, if you'll plastic sheet the floor, cover that with gravel and let it breathe out the top you'll be surprised how well that keeps the ground moisture from condensing on your bike.

It doesn't need to be rough unless the rust is really bad. Let the polish do the work. I buy packages of micro-fiber clothes from Harbor Freight.
