OK I've done all of the research regarding how to replace my chain (thanks to all for your collective contributions to date).
The way I figure it, it's going to take me a long time to recoup the cost of a breaker / rivot tool. Most have commented that they prefer a rivoted master link simply as peace-of-mind, and a few of the long-time riders claim never any problems w/ the clip-type master links.
Here's my question: If I want to replace my original chain w/ a clip-type master'd replacement, can (and if so, how do) I get the chain off without a tool? Do I have to remove the S arm? Should I just try to Dremel that sucker off instead?

I guess you could always try a large bolt cutter.

Use any cutting tool you have. Hacksaw, cold chisle, bolt cutter, etc.
Please post again and let us know how the master link works out.

Yeah.

Yep cut off tool, grinder etc. I would still get a chain breaker, they aren't expensive and come in very handy in an emergency. If a chain would happen to fail and you have the breaker and a spare master link or 2 you can fix it right there and continue the ride. This is just a breaker I am talking about not a breaker/riviter.I use a master link type chain with the clip, not the rivited type. Never had a problem with the master link and in some cases I have had the clip on and off many times. I currently have the stock endless chain but will be replacing it with Honda sprockets and a std. 530 chain with clip type master as soon as the stock chain needs to be replaced.

Pick a link that is engaged on the rear sprocket teeth and easy to get at then use a small angle grinder or equivalent to grind off the rivet heads of the 2 pins on that link. Take a punch and give a llitle tap on those 2 pins and out the link comes. Chain broken.

After you've installed the masterlink chain, one of these might help. An old dirtbike trick. A)Solder over the masterlink clip. B)JBWeld over the masterlink clip. Just make sure you don't get anything on the spinning/pivoting part of the chain.

Open end of the clip faces away from direction of travel too.

I have a combination tool, but I did not use it to remove my chain.....just grind the mashed over ends of one link off, pry off the plate and push it apart....

Grind down the head on one of the pins and then drive it out with a punch. If you are patient, you could probably even do it with a file.
