Here is a quick question.

At 60 mph my rpm is 3500. Is that about right?

sounds right

Always remember to be yourself. Unless you suck. Then pretend to be someone else.

It really depends on the sprockets and what gear you're in.

Thats a cool calculator! They dont have our bikes listed (yet), so I selected a Bonneville and went from there.

Yep. It takes a minute to move things around, but once there...

Good way to check speedo numbers

I wonder what a bigger front tire is going to do to my speedo?
Lower the reading? I think so. Bigger tire should = less wheel RPM than before. Not sure.

Thanks

That speed was in 5th gear with stock sprockets. I am thinking of getting a different front sprocket to lower the rpm. I am on the highway a lot as I use the bike as a commuter most of the time. Constantly looking for "6th" gear. Any suggestions to what sprocket I may go with?

I went with an 18t. I love it. Like you most of my riding is freeway riding. However, you dont feel like you are lugging it at all in town either.

18 tooth sprocket....sounds like a winner to me. Do I need to make any adjustments to put it on? Or should I just bring it to a dealer to do? Does this sprocket have much of an effect on gas mileage? I see Brent sells them. Anything else I should know?

Thanks,
Ron

Nope, no adjustments needed, it's just a swap.

Depends on how mechanicly inclined you are. Pat has some great instructions here http://www.dinqua.com/Triumph/sprocket1.html. I had the dealer do mine. I think it took them about half an hour.

Yes, since you'll be running more at lower RPMs, it will increase your mileage.

It is one of the best least expensive mods you can make to improve performance. No more looking for sixth gear.

+1 on the 18T. I put it on 6 months after I bought the bike and never looked back. Riding 2-up made me miss the 17T for easier and quicker starts, but the BB completely fixed that. I'm staying at the 18/42.

I heard they had changed the sprockets on later models. Does anyone know what front/rear combination is on the new bikes?

Another vote for the 18 / 42 setup.

The 19 / 42 felt way too tall to me when launching from a stop and pulling hills, but I am a might (ahem) wide

On the 08's it is 43/16 for both the Speedmaster and America.

If the new bikes are 43/16, that's even a lower final drive ratio than the original Speedmasters that were 42/16. Is there something I'm missing? They moved higher then back lower? I've thought about trying on my next sprockets 18/43 to go a hair lower than my 18/42, but I can't imagine 16/43 - not without a 6th gear.

I AM RUNNING A 19 TOOTH AND I LOVE IT! HAD IT ON FOR THE LAST 8000 MILES!!!NEVER LOOKING FOR THAT ILLUSIVE SIXTH GEAR ANYMORE AND I CAN STILL TAKE OFF LIKE A BAT OUTTA YOU KNOW WHAT! IF YOU ARE A COMMUTER, I WOULD ONLY RECOMMEND THE 19 TOOTH. GOOD LUCK WITH WHAT YOU CHOOSE. THEY'RE CHEAP, SO IF YOU DONT LIKE WHAT SIZE YOU BOUGHT, YOU CAN ALWAYS SWAP IT OUT AT A LOW COST. BE SAFE!

Best looking black girl around! 2004 SM-spokes, solo seat, lowered rear, 14 in apes, bobber rear fender, no front fender. Flat black all the way around. Jeff

It will probably make the very optimistic stock speedo read closer to the truth.
