I just got some new leather saddle bags and was wondering if it would be a good idea to use some scotch guard for leather on them for some protection. Has anybody done this, or have any opinions on if this would be a good idea?

I saddle soap them to remove the factory gunk then I use a product called Snow seal. Snow Seal won't clog the leather and allows it to breathe so it doesn't rot. You heat the leather either in the oven on about 200 deg or less or with a hair dryer and rub it into the heated leather. You can get it at Cabelas or Dicks. I have also seen it online.

yep, never found anything better. I was turned on to it when I was a teenager, my grandfather use to write for a couple outdoor magazines and was sent some for a comparison test. We have been using it ever since.
