Typical. Couple of weeks ago i get a right old earfull for going off on the fact that every one goes ape over St. Paddies day and now here we are St. Georges Day, ENGLANDs day, England, mighty England. The founder of the modern would, home of some of the finest cars and motorcycles to ever grace the street. Home of The Arsenal, and other not so nice football teams. The home of all things civalised. And of course, REAL BEER. But do we see Red And White every where, NO, are people drinking Red beer, NO. Are school kids running around in red and white, or singing stupid songs, NO.
Now if you dont mind, im going to cry into my pint of Real Ale, while i watch Champions League Footie (between two English Teams, and neither of them Arsenal) so i hope they both loose.

Dare I say, but it could be down to the fact that under the present PC madness that's gripping the country a lot of English nationals might have lost faith and are now either indifferent or even fear celebrating their heritage...? Anyway, high time things changed! Have a good one!

You see, whereas the Irish, and all those wannabees each and every March 17th(to say nothin' of Cinco de Mayo and THAT whole bunch) use that date as an excuse to get RIP ROARIN' PLASTERED(or as you folks over there on that little island might say, "pi$$ed") and basically..UN-civilized!!! And SO....seein' as how the ENGLISH seem to take so much pride in this here "civilized" demeanor o' their's,(of course with the possible exception of the times the afforementioned English enter soccer stadiums)...I have to ask: WHAT'S SO FRIGGIN' FUN ABOUT ACTIN' ALL "CIVILIZED" ALL THE TIME, anyway???!!! You see...NOBODY wants to DO THAT!!!('specially us 'mericans!) Now THAT'S your PROBLEM over there, guys!!! It ain't got NOTHIN' to do with bein' "PC" as far as I can tell. Aren't we talkin' a regular "SNORE-FEST" here, you dern Limeys, you?!(that is once again, outside one of those afforementioned stadiums where they play that funny little kickball game over there!) (MAN...Why does it always take an "outsider" to point out these OBVIOUS reasons for why things are the way they are in the world, HUH?!)

Dwight, the civilised 'stiff upper lip' demeanor that you speak of rarely exists anymore... well, not the last time I went into town on a saturday night... more like 'fat throbbing upper lip'.
Also, English folks don't need a day to celebrate, I beleive we have one of the worst alcohol problems in Europe!

Dwight, think I know where you're coming from  The trouble is my friend is that we could all have a lot more fun, even in the customary reserved English manner of course, if it wasn't for the politically correct! From what I've seen and heard, common sense often doesn't come into the equation. Step out of that fine boundary of what some obscure bodies class as 'socially acceptable' then you could be in it serious. Hopefully St. George's Day is a way down on the hit list, but they've already tried to rename Christmas and Easter... Anyway enough ranting, I'm going to celebrate it even though I'm Welsh by birth!

mmmm Glenmorangie. Got a bottle of that and Glenrothes on my honeymoon... boy did i savour those Lately it's just Guinness, but I'd definately drink cider if it was like the original scrumpy with cores in it n' all.... Just don't tell me it's had a ham shank in it

Nope. Not here...ok it's been in my fridge for a while, but as I've not been on the tablets today I'm risking it.....and normally it's a risk as it's really strong....Westons Old Rosie. And yes has bits in it. Like all proper cider should...

I've never come across scrumpy with an old ham shank in it. In Cornwall, it was traditionally made with a dead rat or mouse in it. These days the rat bit is probably just for the tourists!

I was on a course with a chap from Avonmouth once, who told of such Ham shenanigins... i didn't like the sound of it, so he sent me some for a taste. My fears were confirmed... it was rank!
My father in law always tells of when they used to holiday in Tintagel and the barman would only serve 2x half pints to any customer due to its intoxicating qualities
Them days though, drink driving wasn't as frowned upon as it is now. I laugh when he tells stories of the 15 pints they all drank... BUT the designated driver could only have 7 or 8... and HAD to have a coffee before the drive home. Ha! a coffee!!!

Good old St. George's Day, my birthday! and also the anniversary of my fathers death. Mixed feelings about today for obvious reasons. I hate the fact that we in England are ashamed of wearing our national colours today. Probably cos the red and white cross was highjacked by the NF and now the BNP in the 70's and 80's and in a lot of peoples minds it stands for Facism. In recent years of course we've seen a come back in our national pride and the good ol St Georges cross appears now and then when Englands footballers take to the field. I for one will wear my flag with pride today, safe in the knowledge that I'm not a facist, just proud to be a very slightly eccentric Englishman. As they won't make it a national holiday, I'm taking the day off and going to the Pub for a pint of room temperature ale. a bag of pork scratchins and a good laugh! Enjoy one and all and Happy St Georges Day!!!!

well just got in from buying in london this morning .coming out of our capital of england saw ONE flag on a car the radio stations on about today the pm whats the flag to fly on the gov buildings.but the english people dont seem to go for it like the rest of the world ( scots welsh Irish,yanks,etc ) it's been a bit of pc here , over the years it has been associated with racism due to some bad elelments in our country but hopefully the tide is changing and we can copy the rest of you So today i shall have a good old english roast beef dinner and spottie dick with custard just going for my 11's tea and crumpets ( + a jaffa cake ) have a nice day now

Well I know I dont celebrate St Andrews day ... or St Paddies day. I keep the Sabbath and anything else I can get my hands on. I am not to keen on xmas preferring the old custom of celebrating ne'erday properly.
But to all my English brothers and sisters on here dont let any body dismiss your right to celebrate your patron saints day. Its time the masses stood up against all this PC nonsense and said yes I am proud to be ------ you can fill in the blanks yourselves. Have a good one and Slainthe.

Of course, you count, my friend! Except here I was trying to point out that Britain (and hence Britons) was originally the land of the Brythonic, Celtic speakers (i.e. the Cornish and Welsh [and Cumbrians too]) and so this group are in reality the true 'Britons'. Our brother Celts from Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Mann were not Brythonic speaking but Goedelic Celtic speaking and have their origins, as you know, in the island of Ireland. Hope that clears things up!

I must admit I don't celebrate St Georges day as it's generally a non event and has no meaning.
I'm not too sure of where St George came from, but lets face it we'll take any old foreigner, wrap a flag around them and celebrate their "Englishness".
For reference look at our football, rugby and cricket teams. Oh and don't forget the royal family.
Before the war on terror, if I saw an unattended package I used to think "I'll be having that!"
