First non "my bike don't work!" post, so apologies to the older hands who have seen this all before

About to escape work after killing time on the net and noticed onijack's post about renaming his bike (good name btw).

No doubt it's a thread thats been brought up before, but out of idle curiosity what have you named your bike and why? (either why the name...or why did you name it at all)

Or alternatively, if you're of the other midset and specifically _not_ named your bike.. how come?

I have a mate who actively refuses to name his car or bike because he doesn't want to give it a personality to get angry with.

Equally i thought fairly long and hard about naming my bike (as it's my first bike that i actually owned) as i felt it was just as important to give it a name as it would be to..i don't know..pass the bike test (scheduled for May)

thoughts?

Anthony

I think this has been asked before, and is probably in the archives gathering gremlins.

I named mine Black Beauty, because she is black and has nice lines. "Lines I said"

I inventively named my trusty Speedmaster 'Triumph,' after 'Triumph, the insult comic dog.'

Here's why:

I call her "Baby Girl", but my wife refers to her as "that bike" or my "girlfriend".

Learning from my mistakes... again and again.

Nothing. Cuz it's silly. But to each his or her own. Had a hard enough time naming my pets.

Well Anthony, the wife and I really don't have any names for our vehicles..EXCEPT..she does refer to my 550 Spyder as "The Death Car".

(and I'm NOT so sure it's ONLY because James Dean died in one of these itty bitty little suckers either)

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I call my TBA "The Bonnie"
My Honda is called "The Honda"
My car is called "The Jag"
I call my wives SUV, that big fat truck.

The only car that i have had an affectionate name form was my Triumph TR7 convertable. I had two names for her. Kermit, and The Green Goddess.

My friends also had two names form my TR7. Either the Tea Bag (the roof leaked...A LOT) or "the pile of shite". Dont quite know why. Averaging one break down a month isnt that bad....is it?

Apparently if you're going to name your vehicles (and I do have that habit too), don't name your two-wheeled mistress after a favorite ex-girlfriend... it can cause a serious condition known as lackanookie, plus a rather annoying sound in the ears.

(oh and I ALMOST forgot THIS one..."&^^$#@!#!!!")

Sorry John, I don't know what came over me there. I'm all better now. I hope you'll forgive me. Tell ya what?! I'll buy ya a beer when you get to Prescott next month...okay?!

You know I really didn't mean it when I called you all those "names".

Except that last one, of course!

(but as Anthony asked to begin with in his thread here..."What's in a name?" ANYWAY, huh?!)

Suppose some folks feel they want to, some don’t. Maybe it stems from the tradition of naming ships and boats for good luck?
I've named my bikes, don’t usually name my cars, they just get me from A to B. See my bikes as different though. Maybe it’s because I have a lot more enjoyment and spend more care on my bikes than my cars!
Anyway it’s harmless - Black Bess is named after the highwayman Dick Turpin’s trusty mare BTW, though his lifestyle by all accounts was a tad dodgy...

A little too anthropomorphic for me.

Naming an inanimate object seems to imply a relationship.
It's just a machine.
A fun one that I enjoy immensely, but one that I would get rid of in a heartbeat if I wanted something else more.

And I wouldn't feel bad about it.

I gotta agree 100%. The closest I have come up with a name for my bike is The as in The Bike or The Speedy. Funny my car has he same name.

And then wondering of a bike or car is male or female is even sillier.

Yeah Soren?! Well then re-read your second to the last sentence above and then tell us all why you think your car is a "HE" then, dude!!!

I guess I feel totally different about it. I just sold my old, worn out, 76 blazer for $400 and I felt a slight twinge when it left the pasture. I hate selling any of my machines, even the ones that have outlived their usefullness. Although I don't name them, I feel a certain, almost subliminal bond with my cars, bikes and trucks. I know this sounds nuts, but I have, with rare exception, had incredibally good "luck" with most of my motor vehicles through the years. Is that because I take good care of them and the mechanical bits work better because of the regular maintenence?... or is it because on some kind of metaphyisical, unseen plane the machine is responding to a positive, almost affectionate care?

Yet the other day on the DMV thread, you said you put your new registration sticker on your wife's car when it should have gone on yours!

You've been in the sun too long if you can't spot the difference between a Jag and an SUV!

Useless information, I saw what looked like a Jag but it was hiked up and looked like it was on steroids.
It was in Coventry and was covered in that black stuff they put on cars so you can't see the true shape.
Told a mate and he says he'd heard that Jag are developing an SUV type thingy.
Remember you heard it here first (or probably not!) .....

My grandfather collected antique cars and his favorite was a 1923 Bentley in British Racing Green and Silver. When I became older I started to notice that something was passed to me genetically and I was wanting to collect a classic as well. When I started looking for a bike, that car was what I was looking for on 2 wheels. Needless to say that the America fit the bill perfectly as if I had designed it myself. My grandfather died just before I purchased the bike and it just seemed right and natural for my Trusty Triumph to forever be known as Bentley in his honor.

As for the naming issue to begin with, for me I have always felt that sometimes a machine becomes something a little more. It transcends being just a material possession and enhances your life in a way similar to other relationships. To me, something like that needs a name.
