Hi, I read somewhere on here, that the black control/swith housings on my TBA 2002 could be swapped with Harley billet or chrome items. Anybody out there know which model provides the best fit? I want to get this done in time for Dent and before I run my wiring through the bars. Anyone out there know the answer? Cheers Pony

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say just about any for 1" bars should work. You just need to know how to wire up the new switches.

Could be, but I needed to make sure that they take the throttle/idle cable too. Harley dealer wasn't much use on the phone.

Personally, I'd take a trip to a Harley (or Honda, Suzuki, Honda, Kawasaki) shop and just look to see if any bikes on the showroom floor have controls & throttle cables situated similarly.

I've noticed that with our bikes they're not much help in person either

Its a real shame, why don't triumph dealerships sell other manufactures custom parts too. Walk into any Harley dealer and the place is awash with products from custom chrome, Kuryakin etc etc. Bout time Triumph realised there is a real market in the UK for people who like to tinker with their bikes. I'd like my bike to be all british but as it is I seem to have to keep buying bits for an imaginary Harley and hoping I can get them to fit.

Because there really aren't that many... Brent, eddy, SRS, rivco. Most everything else is trial and error.

So, back to the plot. will harley controls fit? which ones would people recommend. which set of Harley braided cables (model/Year) could be used to replace the stock black ones once the control housing is swapped?

There is little question that this could be done. However, you should take a look at a set of Harley controls. The brake master cyl. is a component fit with the right side switch housing (one cannot really be used without the other). Some companies like Performance Machine and Joker make some beautiful, and expensive, master cyl/clutch lever sets, but you need to watch cyl bore etc. or you may end up with a front brake that actually works well (or not). There are no Harley cables that will fit, two different animals. You would need to have custom cables made up. Mark at Barnett's tool and engineering division in CA does a great job. The actual electrical switches are also available in the aftermarket at a price. From a custom builder's point of view I'd say you won't get much bang for your buck doing any thing of this sort, our controls already look good unlike other bikes that are screaming out for replacement. Or, if you really must, make sure you do your homework.

The larger question, assuming you're talking about stock Harley controls and not fancy billet aftermarket controls, is WHY? Why would you want to do this?

cos I wanted nice chrome ones. Thought this would be the easiest route to go down. Looks like I was wrong, it's far from easy. I'm starting at the front of the bike and working back, I just want the bars to look really clean and unclutered.

Most of the HD controls I have seen have a seperate throttle and just a single cable. There is a square type HD switch housing the is part of the master cyl and has the break lever on the throttle side and has the clutch lever on the clutch side. I say square for lack of a better description since I can't remember what model the fit.

We've seen chromed stock Triumph controls before. Combine that with hidden wiring and it will look very clean. Also consider deleting the stock speedo and putting a small one in the dash where the tach goes. Really cleans things up.

Sounds good. Any thoughts on the braided cables. I've had a quote from Venhill to get some made, but it means sending my cables to them for 2 weeks. Can't go that long without riding! Bought a very very nice 4 pot polished front caliper today from Pretech, so funds are a bit tight too. Thought I might be able to shortcut things by using Harley cables & controls

i am actually going to be doing this. you must do research befoer getting into this tho as there is a lot to think about. you need clutch and throttle cables custom made, the wiring is also different as harleys have directionals on both side unlike our one side. i am doing this mod not just because they will look much better, but because i am getting a 6 piston caliper and believe it or not the harley master cylinders are pretty good and much better then ours. it wont be cheap tho. trust me. i am working a bunch of overtime to pay for this little project. i will take before and after pics when its done. hopefully i can get it done in the next 3 weeks

Well, of course, if you stick with the stock controls there are braided cables available from our popular vendors. If you stick with stock or near stock spec risers and handlebars, you can have someplace like Barnett make them up for you. Otherwise adjust the length as necessary when ordering. One way to get around sending cables is to see if you can buy someone's old stock cables for cheap and send those in to be matched.

Frank, I've sent you a PM. Hopefully, we can join forces on this project. I've bought some cheap Harley chromed controls off ebay so I can try this out whilst I save up for some nice Billet custom items. They are coming to the UK from the USA so might take a while. At least if I have to bodge it, I won't have wrecked an expensive set and I can sell the experimental ones on ebay once I've done.

As chopperpaul said Barnetts can make you a set of all cables in the the size you need without having to send your's in. They have our sizes in the computer but not in the catalog. You do have to talk to Mark in eng.

Motion Pro Cables also do the cables aswell as Cyclebrakes.com In my opinion after starting the long road to custom controls and switches is do research and know what you are doing. In my little project all of the switches have been changed to the Momentary switches therefore required a complete change of wiring solution so i installed the Batastini EZ Harness http://www.battistinis.co.uk/product.php?id=69 which lets you use all the same functions as stock but with a better look, Instructions and wiring diagram can be found here http://www.arlenness.com/pdf/15-241.pdf The available controls that use the Momentary type switches are a lot smaller and seem to offer a better looking style. (my opinion). The Batistini EZ harness (custom version) is quite easy to wire up just need to take your time and do it right first time. As for the brakes side as previousley said make sure that they are the right size and remember that the banjo on the Harley side will be a 3/8 the thread and the caliper side will be 10mm. All of the conectors will be a 10mm measurement. Another good option for cabling and hose requirements are J&p cycles i have dealt with them a lot in getting the parts i needed and they have bee really helpfull and have assisted in any way they could. Hope that helps in some small way

This has all been really helpful guys. Got the Bars, Got the controls and switches. Got the grips and Bar end flashers. So just saving for the cables. Due to the bars I'm using, Fehling Low an' dirty wide bars, I'll need to get custom lengths made up too.
Will the expense never end?

Britrover has done this already with Carlini Super Sweep bars and Ness chrome controls. He had to wire it like a Harley with right turn on right side, so you need to split the wiring. You can probably find his thread somewhere in the archives. I have the Carlinis and Drag Specialties controls and am in the process of doing this myself after I finish polishing my forks and yokes.
Good Luck...we'll have to compare pics in a few weeks.
