Yesterday, I posted on the 'Other Bikes' forum about being 'in love' with the new Harley Rocker, so today, I went by the local HDealer to look at the thing up close and personal. I fell further in love with it and was ready to plunk down some green and order one. Well, the sales person left for a few minutes, and I started wandering around the 'Boutique' to think it over. As I was wandering and looking at all the merchandise, I had an epiphany. I realized that I could afford to buy a Rocker if I sold my trusty Triumph, but after I did it, I'd have to spend a big additional wad of hard earned money on a bunch of over priced HD branded clothing and other paraphenalia to fit in. I did some quick math, and I determined that while I COULD afford the Rocker, buying all the additional HD crap would deplete my bank account to an unacceptably low level.
I'm keeping my Triumph!!!

I don't know amigo(that must be a holdover from that other thread goin' on right now)...BUT...your reasons for this pass on buyin' that there Harley sound much too "mercenary" to ME! Yep! Sounds like you just might be in jeopardy of losin' your "immortal soul" from here, dude! (strength boy...STRENGTH!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I dont think the dealer would appreciate losing all that business after people rode a Triumph and then left

Funny you mention that, Dave.(well, not REALLY funny)
I went into my local H-D dealer last week and there amongst all the Harleys sat an '07 Triumph Scrambler with just about every accessory Triumph makes for that model bolted to it. Probably at least a grand or more in those accessories. It had only about 1200 miles on it and was in perfect shape, and they wanted $6900 for it.
Gotta say I thought long and hard about whippin' the old checkbook out.
(that is until I reminded myself of how my mutual funds and my IRA were doin' right now)

When the new 1700 (1820? 1920?) cc Triumph Mystery Cruiser comes out, a lot of people may trade in their Speedies and Americas. Something to think about...

I really want one of those, but I guess my old Honda Scrambler is gonna have too be good enough for now.

but, trading in a Triumph for another Triumph just doesn't seem as wrong

Besides, if you switched to H-D, you'd have to join one of those HOG forums . . . (better a RAT than a HOG)

I was in the same exact boat,, I've always been split on HD and triumph and offended some people here around last year I'm sure because i was getting very defensive with the HD comments i was hearing. my brain was like Mush and I just didn't know what i wanted and it was killing me to the point I left my brandnew speedy over my parents house with no cover all winter i just didn't care about bikes anymore.. so i findmyself back in the HD dealer checking out the new Fatbob and man I came so close to buying it but at some point I snapped out of it and said to myself I haven't even given this speedy a chance and jsut rode it all stock for a couple months after I bought it,, decided it needs my love so instead of buying a new HD I decided to keep my bike and hook it up to suit my style and taste,, you'll see more and more posts looking for advice on stuff but I will get that bike the way I like it just as I would with a new harley (buying all that extra stuff and gear)
and I think I'll get more value and satisfaction in my triumph upgrades than I would with the HD anyday (even though I need the HD Broomhandle dragbars cause nobody who sells triumph ups has any)
I'm looking forward to my first ride this season and the new SS long slash cuts should be here in a week..
don't wait for other people, Just do it!

Glad to have ya back! Who were ya gonna talk to if you got rid of your speedy to get the HD? You surely know by now that half of the fun of the speedy is talking to us about it!

Most of our HD bashing is just in fun, most of my friends ride HD and they really are not bad bikes anymore. Most of them are just not comfortable to me and seem to have become the popular bike and no more individuality than any V twin jap bike wanna be HD.

I for one will be keeping my Speedmaster. Went for a ride yesterday for about 4 hrs and love that bike more every time I ride it. I like the air cooled vertical twins and have no interest in anything water cooled.I supposed I could live with FI if I had to just like I have with no kickstart or points. I miss the days of $6 to fix your ignition now it's $500 when you lose your spark.

Believe it or not JB, I've been pondering that exact same point, but for a different reason. Should something positive come from this last job interview, the cash flow thing will be TIGHT since I will have to schlepp my stuff out west, rent a new house plus cover the old house in CT for a month or so, and may have to repay part of my original relocation costs to move to CT in the first place, and so the bike is an obvious answer. Right now I'm just waiting to see what unfolds and how it does, and have been mulling over a couple options, and even IF it does come to that (hope not, and that will be a last resort), I will get back in to riding as soon as I am settled and have a home.(and it WILL be a Triumph again, although maybe a TT). We'll see....

I saw a Rocker last night at a bike night. Thats a great looking motorcycle! It is not a geezer bike though. Bags, floorboards, windshields, etc. would just make it look silly. It really needs no extra dodads, as it is intended to be an old school, minimalistic ride. short video hereGreat shots of the softail action working on the road.

While i was looking through pictures of my old bikes recently i came to realize that ALL of them were paid for. So why in gods name did i sell/trade them. You dont get much when you sell them and next to nothing when you trade. I could kick myself, IF i had the foresight to keep all my old bikes i would have a petty impressive collection now.
From now on, when i want a new bike, im keeping what i have and just adding to the stable. So old boy, if you like the Rocker, and can afford it. BUY IT, but keep the speedie as well.
You only live once, so enjoy it.

Dude,
They have Harley Owner rings now. Like class rings. I saw them at Harley of Graceland the other day where they only had 1 bike and it was not for sale. You could buy Elvis on black and orange though.

See, this is what happens with PhotoPost being down for so long...people start thinking about buying Harleys. With the gallerys around, all you had to do is look through them to see all the gorgeous bikes on this site to know you bought the right bike and get ideas on how to make your ride more beautiful. Just one look at this particular fine mo-chine and you'll be the envy of all your Harley riding friends as strangers walk by their chromed out $20,000 garage queens to feast their eyes on your modestly outfitted Triumph that costs less than half of those accessorized Harleys. Hey, just because that's a pic of my bike doesn't mean I'm biased. The added bonus is that you know when the roads get twisty, you'll be leaving those Harleys in your dust. How could you even think about selling your bike?

Had a lot of fun last week at work. Had to come in early and leave late, so I parked my bike in the employee lot for a change. My office window looks down on the bike area and I got to watch the reactions at the Tour changes (very few folks know I ride). The HD, Ducatista and Beemer riders did the appreciative walkaround. A week and they're still trying to figure out where the Triumph came from. The Yamahondakawazuki riders - clueless.
Different is good.
