on the way to work, my left carb started to make a funky noise. Woosh, woosh. It got worse to the point of not being able to keep it running. It back fired several times and popping like crazy. I limped home and realized that the little nipple on the front of the L carb was split and gone. It's the one that you block when doing an AI removal. This is the second time that cheap nipple has blown. Frank says that you can use a tube to connect to the same nipple (like that word) on the R carb but mine is a california emissions model and I believe that the R side tube goes to that system.
I would remove that whole system but I know not where the rest of the system goes. Anyone ever remove the charcoal canisters on the underside of our bikes?
also, when trying to find a fix, I saw that the rubber boots that connect the airbox to the back of the carbs are spliting pretty badly. they are all cracked. Other then removal and freak install, what is the next option? Is there a rubber cement that I can use to patch it up? I REALLY like how the bike runs with the stock box and don't want to fiddle with it. I'm not even sure that they are crack through but it's something that has to be addressed.
Any advise would be very helpfull.....thanks!!!!!!!

I removed all the emission crud from my 07 , not a big deal. just follow all the vacume lines and remove everthing attached. just do not remove the vent line from the fuel tank. I think the rubber boots from the carbs to the airbox are available at the dealer. the plugs on the vacume nipples always seem to dry and crack often , just keep a few with the bike or in your jacket pocket.

First, the vacuum caps are stock items at any auto store usually on a plastic stick with multiple sizes for a couple of bucks. And, I also use Frank's method of a connecting tube between the manifolds on one of my bikes...I'd like to think it helps but I really can't tell the diff between one motor and the other. I still carry some spare caps because I've lost one and riding home with all that backfiring at each light is distressing.
I had some pretty visible cracking in my rubber carb boots on my '01 so I replaced them thinking the cracks went all the way through. Not! Those puppies are very thick and the dry rot was only on the surface. Still, the new boots gave me renewed confidence in the bike so I was happy to have them; they're not too expensive and an easy replacement if you are armed with a dab of silicon spray and put them on the right way

thanks for the info......The vent hose for the tank goes from the bottom of the tank to one of the emmissions components correct? do I just disconnect it and let it run to the bottom of the bike?
also, are there any electrical connections in the system and how do I deal with those?
thanks!!!!

that's what I thought.....I actually thought the two sm canisters had electrical components to them....hopefully snekeptp can comment on that.
btw-the dealer is putting in a claim for the airbox. Although I believe old rodie is correct that the walls on the boots are really thick. The bike runs fine. I couldn't get behind them through the air box to check.

Yeah. The click when you turn the key on is a valve in the system. If I remember correctly, just unplug it.

EASY FIX...took me 30 minutes to remove the Cali kit. Remove everything-airlines and charcoal cannister. Then, cap the four ports on your carbs ( I double them up) and go ride! Like said earlier, keep a few extra squirrel condoms on the bike. Good luck, be safe!

Another suggestion...use mini hose-clamps to secure the vacuum caps

If you want to sell those canisters, send me a pm. I'll give you a couple bucks and shipping.
As for the rubber boots cracking, any rubber treatment like a tire dressing should help preserve them, but nothing is gonna heal the existing cracks. When you get on the throttle, the carbs actually move back and forth a bit so the rubber boots flex. Any kind of a "crack" filler probably wouldn't last too long... you could put a carb brace on your carbs to prevent that.
And, if you removed/do remove your AI, you can use the plastic flex hose to connect 2 of the ports together. It just smoothes out the idle a bit....

deon, I'll let you know when I get to taking the system off.
What you said made me think! The rubber cap split, the boots going into the carb cracked AND I have some cracking on the wall of one of my tires!!!!!!
I am willing to bet that one of the spray on, hose off cleaners that I used last year must NOT be rubbber friendly.
what's the chances of all those rubber things cracking all at once?
skydivejeff-thanks for the pep talk-4 holes to plug-that helps!!!! and just unplug the electrical connection with no jumpers right?
sing ring-good idea!

Yep. I just read your other post and was gonna reply there. Somewhere in my addled brain I had a deja-vu moment - so here I am. I'm just interested in the canister. No tubes, tees, hoses... just the can, man.

Deon, there are 2 cans and two purge valves.....do you want BOTH of the cans?
As soon as someone chimes in on the "other post" and can let me know where the elusive 14 hose goes, I'll rip er' apart and get your address.

His will be filled with copious quantities of full strength, unscented, unflavored Marlboro. It won't be some cutesy attempt at Middle Eastern socializing, or youthful fancy - just a matter of traveling convenience - Much like my helmet mounted Red Bull dispenser.

As long as the bike runs fine with out them, you can cover the shipping and take them....Can't think of a reason it won't.....I'll snap some pictures on what they look like on the bike for you....btw--the perg valves have electical connections that you will need.

I don't see how this is possible....if you dettach the entire system there is one hose that runs from a "T" connector between the carbs and runs to the small charcoal canister. If you cap that off, the bike WILL NOT RUN.
Do you remember what you did with that T connector hose? If you leave the small canister the bike will run but if it is plugged, the bike won't run.
ANYONE??????????????????????????????

I just want the cans, man...
No connections. I'm not going green. I want to explore the possibilities.
I may fill them with helium and take a hit when some older-than-me geezer wants to talk history.... I can freak them out with a Howie Mandell / Bobbie voice.

well it doesn't look like I'll be able to send them after all. I can't believe that nobody here has ever removed the emmission system. Better yet, I can't believe that someone can't or won't answer a simple Carb question.
The "just cap everything off" approach is incorrect and it will stay on until I can find out what that plastic T connector between my carbs is.
I can't believe I'm saying this but I guess i'll try "the other site" to see if anyone can lend a hand over there.

I'm thinking Greybeard posted a how-to on this, but that was quite a while ago.
I'd like to help, but here in Pa we don't allow no stinkin' Kalifornica emissions crap on our bikes.
Yet.
