Yesterday I stopped TBA during a ride funny smell, noticed drop of brake fluid, on brake reservoir, did not want to get my gloves dirty with brake fluid, DUMB MOVE, PUT MY LEFT PALM ON EXHAUST CLOSE TO BRAKE RESERVOIR, SECOND DEGREE BURN, LOTS OF LIQUID VITIMAN E, LATER OPENED CAPSULE OF OMAGA 3 FATTY ACID, (applied liberally) THAT DID THE TRICK. RIDE DID NOT LAST LONG YESTERDAY. 100 MILES TODAY. SO DON'T FORGET TO KEEP YOUR GLOVES ON WHEN POKING AROUND HOT ENGINE.

Been there...done that, alright!

This was me about three years ago....

Okay. I've just run the engine to heat up the oil so I can change it. Now, let me just scoot under here so I get to the drain plug with this wrench in my right hand. Now how can I use my left hard over there somewhere to assist me in this endevour. Ah! Now there's somethin'!

YE-OUWWWWWW!!!!!!!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Got the scar!
My speedo stopped working and I reached forward at a light to wiggle the cable...my jacket sleeve rode up my arm and left just enough bare skin between the sleeve and the glove to tssssssyeaaahhhh.

I was a passenger on a dirt bike when I was a kid and lost the passenger peg, it had turned so it folded down. I reached down to right it and laid my forearm on the spark arrester, when I pulled away it left sizzling skin stuck to it. I have had plenty exhaust burns in my line of work but that one was bad. Also done the reallt stupid move a few times of welding a piece of steel then immediately grabbing it with my ungloved hand.

I've burned my arms washing my bike. After I rinse it off I turn on so the engine heat can evaporate any standing water which of course heats up the headers...
Right after the washing I start waxing and more then once I've laid my arm across the headers while waxing the front mudguard. It doesn't happen anymore since I wrapped my headers, with em wrapped you can touch em and have enough time to pull away before it leaves a mark.

You guys are kidding, right? This is the first time you noticed exhaust headers get hot?

It's not about noticing, I just wasn't paying attention and made a mistake.

On a related note, one of my pet peeves is seeing young, beautiful girls riding on the back of bikes with shorts on. Don't get me wrong, I dig the shorts (at least when the wife isn't with me) but, you'd be surprised how many women I know who have a nasty scar on their legs caused by a slow, non threatening spill on a bike with hot pipes.

I have not burnt my self on Bonnies engine bits, however i seem to drop jackets, cloths and rags on the pipes on a regular basis. Melted my mesh jacket on the right side pipe, and only last week melted one of my synthetic cleaning clothes on the left pipe. It now has the strangest texture on it. When i get past the ^%$ ^&^%$# &^%$^&* pipes attitude I will get down with some cleaners and elbow grease and put it right. But at the moment im still in the "argh screw it' mood.

Was at a Subway (sandwhiches) once in South Carolina, when the guy came out to look at my bike because he wanted to get a bike. He bends down to look at my engine up close and says "are the pipes hot?" as he puts his hand right on the bend in the header where it comes out of the heads. About 2 full seconds passed before he let out this screech and I said, "yes, they're hot, not a good idea to touch them!"... I think he might have learned a lesson that day!

These thing happen when I'm not paying as much attention as I should have but if you get burned enough times you learn. Also of a similar note. I have a fireplace insert, several times I needed to open the fireplace door a little more, I've done it several times with the back of my hand. Ouch.

I also have a fireplace insert, by April 10th of each year I have a series of little scars. They go away by the fourth, only to reappear by April 10th. Wierd how that happens.

Last year I was tightening a highway peg fastener on my recently shut off motorcycle in Chy's front yard. When I heard my index finger make a sizzling sound, I thought "this is going to hurt".

Reminds me of the time I rode two blocks in Nelson, BC, from The Hume(idor) to the Grand Hotel wearing shorts, moments after riding into town and unloading (and changing into shorts). Those engine cases get HOT after riding all day. Burned a little red oval into my left calf.

I was going to remove my front wheel for the first time but needed a large allen wrench for the axel. I rode the bike to Sears a few blocks away to make sure I got the exact size that I needed and rode back to the garage. Sure enough, as I was using that new perfect fit allen wrench on the front axel I pushed my elbow right up against my right down tube. I still have the scar today.

Had my bike a couple weeks when I saw a cop buddy out on the side of the road. I had been running it pretty hard & it was making the popping noise from being hot when he noticed the gold tint on my headers......he touched it!

we should do this every weekend!

Also to add to this little thread. When taking something out of the oven use "oven Gloves" and not a "Tea towel"...
