Hi, just wondering what type of screws I can get to replace the stock screws on the carburetors.I know that Brent sells them, but I thought I had seen on here somewhere that you can get them at a hardware store for much cheaper. Anyone know what kind? Also does anyone know if I will need the "D" shaped tool to re-jet a 2006 speedmaster? I wasn't sure because Dinqua's site said 2004 and up. Thanks!

I went to the local hardware store and picked up some button head allen wrench type that were stainless steel. Threads and length are what you will need. Sorry I don't know the thread type off the top of my head. I don't think you'll need a D-Tool for the mixture screws, its pretty easy with a light and a mirror to see in the hole and figure out what you got. You won't need the tool for the pilot and main jets which are revealed under the bowl.
Hope I helped out.

You will need the D tool or a suitable substitute for adjusting the air mix screw; rumor has it the plastic end of uncrimped butt splice works fairly well.

she means the bowl and top cover screws I think. Take 1 of each with you for length but the thread is 4mm X 0.7. Got mine at Ace Hardware , they seem to have the best selection of stainless here.

Whatever you get, do NOT, I repeat, do NOT over tighten them!! The metal the carbs are made of is WAY softer than the screws. That's why the stock carbs come with brass screws.

My stock screws on both Wendys and my bike are not brass and I doubt they are on any of them. They are steel with a brass looking coating.

The carb screws are:
Qnty 8 - M4 x 14 Qnty 8 - M4 x 8 also get 16 M4 washers
I would suggest getting socket head as they have more surface area for the Allen wrench to work on. Get them in stainless steel.

Whatever she replaces them with will be much stronger than the material in the carb, so she needs to be careful regardless.

And don't use Blue Loctite either! That pot metal in the carbs is pretty soft.

In '04 and later models the air mix screw is shaped like a "D" to prevent tampering by the consumer, hence the aftermarket "D" tool. Earlier models have a basic slotted screw instead. You'll find the air mix screw (one per carb) underneath at the front center adjacent to the float bowl.

And they may be covered/hidden by a non-tamper cap, I think.

I'm confused: Is the idle mixture screw the D-screw? OR Is the idle mixture screw underneath the D-Screw? OR Is the idle mixture screw a D-screw underneath some other kind of cap?

It can be confusing, Brad. Basically, it goes like this;
2001- mid 2004, Triumph had regualr slotted mix screws hidden behind a pewter(?) slug, which was the Man's attempt at making the screws only accessible by a "qualified" mechanic.
Late 2004, Triumph, or whomever made the decision, switched to D-shaped screws. Again, an attempt to make it more difficult for the average Joe to monkey with.
So, on your 2008 SM you have D shaped mixture screws.

But the D screw is not behind a cap right? Stick it to the Man!

Absolutely right. The D-shaped screws are not hidden behind anything. Quote:

The D screw can be removed with some small needle nose pliers or hemostats. If you are careful you can cut a slot in the head and reinstall. I did this with a dremel too with cutting disc.
