I ordered some Bub's pipes and have a question on the installation. I looked at the installation instructions for the Bub's pipes on their website and it says:

"...we recommend using hi-temp silicone seal on both the outside mating surface of the header and the inside mating surface of the muffler to insure against leakage."

Do you guys do this? The reason I asked is that I used some exhaust sealer installing pipes on my old bike and it melted and made a mess. If you do use the hi-temp silicon sealant, what kind do you use?

Looks like my weekend project is cut out for me...also installing airbox removal kit and rejetting

I didn't use any type of sealer when I put mine on and no problem with exhaust leaks after 8500 miles they fit tight. If you follow the directions on this site for the carb rejetting you won't have any problems with that.I didn't remove the air box just modified it and installed a K&N filter so no advice for that from me on that one.Good luck and remember rule #1 if you get agravated walk away for a little bit and have a Guinness

I use the Red high temp silicone but Permatex makes something called Ultra Black that works just as well and is high temp. The high temp you want is usually red.

FWIT, on BUB jetting, I got two different suggestions. I went with 128 mains and one shim-the bike runs great. NO popping on decel and the plugs look ok. gas milage is 45-48 mpg and she pulls well at all RPM. Guess it's right.

I was tenatively going to go with 140 mains and 42 pilots, which is what the guy at British Customs said they put in with Bub's and the airbox elimination kit. Is the 42 pilot the same as stock? I'm a little more comfortable with the 140/42 now seeing your relatively smaller jet size as the Dinqua site recommended 160 mains, although I heard that runs on the rich side. Do you know how 128 mains and one shim compares to 140/42? Obviously 128 is smaller than 140, but I'd think the shim adds something.

I've got 45/135 w/1 shim on stock needles, UNI filter
no snork, no holes. MPG=poor SPM(smiles per miles)=max

I'm using 125's with 2 shims. with the bubs. I have the top snorckle removed.

The only reason I went with 2 shims is because for awhile, I was running 122's. It ran like the wind with that set up but with the 125's I believe one shim needs to go like kingoffleece mentioned.

How will I know if I need to use shims?

I believe that the shims will come in to play anywhere from 1/4 to 3/4 throttle position.

I opened up the carbs tonight an saw that there where actually 3 shims on the needle. WAY to many. The 125's with 1 shim is working very nicely for me now.

I just had the long slash cuts installed on my 07 America. I chickened out and had it done at the dealer. Actually I got the $1000 in free accessories with the purchase and went ahead and paid for the labor to have them all installed. AI removed, Freak Kit installed, Light bar etc. I was originally going to do it all myself; so I had previously checked Dinquas site. His calculator called for a 159.5 main. When I picked up the bike I asked the mechanic what main he ended up with and he said a 160. So I guess the calculator is pretty well on. I still need to take it somewhere and get it on the dyno. They don't have one where I got the bike. By the way the Bubs sound great. It seems a little less responsive when you open it up at about 40-50mph, but the acceleration after that is better. I am not getting the head snap I got when I opened it up when stock. We'll have to put it on the dyno and play with it a little. I guess I'll have to change the signature.

2007 America Pacific Blue and New England White, AI removed, Freak Kit, Bubs long slash cut, 160 mains.

Pipe installation was pretty easy once I wrestled them on. High-temp Permatex worked well. I put in the 145 but left in the 40 pilot...it now runs a little rough at idle and occasionally dies unless the choke is out when cold when I didn't need the choke before. I think I'm going to try the 42 pilot. I'm also going to add a shim because I think it's a little flat mid throttle.

Here's a link to a youtube clip if anyone's interested as to what they sound like. They are actually louder and deeper sounding than what appears in the video.

Excellent. Thanks Bradford for giving me the opportunity to listen to the Bubs. I take on board what you say about louder and deeper but still, I now have a better appreciation of them and I'm sure watching and listening to this clip is better than nothing.

Staintune Pipes, K&N Pods, 45 pilots, TBS needles and 145 mains.

BTW...when I first put the Bub's on I thought they were too loud but now that I'm used to them I wouldn't have it any other way. I just went on a 250 mile ride with on both windy rodes and the freeway and they rocked. I was riding with a bunch of bigger cruisers -- Harley's, a Victory, and a huge Yamaha and I held me own! The're deep sounding at idle but at high speed settle town to kind of a quiter crisp roar.

I have 42 pilots in now and 140 mains, mixture screws 1 3/4 turns out...seems the 42 pilots might be right though it looks like lots of people use 145s. (have Bub's and K&N pods) It's running pretty good. I have some bigger mains coming 145, 150 so I'll try those for kicks. Also figured I'd try a shim. Think I need to find a dyno.

BTW...get the idle mixture screws from newbonneville.com...they are great and make adjusting the idle mixture much easier...with the d-tool I coudn't tell whether I was turning it or not.

42 is probably too small and I would be willing to bet you are scary lean with 42s and only 1 3/4 turns out with your set up.

You may be right..I'm getting an occasional pop on decel...I've been turning them out 1/4 turn at a time -- now about 2 1/2 turns out...I'll see how it goes and probably try 45s

Yea, you were right...I put in 45 pilots and think it's pretty dialed-in now. Don't have any hint of hesitation or surging at low throttle now. Still think I'm going to try a shim as I can feel the power really surge as I go towards wide open throttle. Maybe it will boost up mid-throttle.
