I was looking into RN school hard and heavy, still ework at the hospital on the weekends, but man I tell ya, it is not my cup of tea.. I have spent 15 years in a ambulace be idt on the ground or air, so the hospital hting is a totaly diffrent ball of wax to me.. In a 12 hour shift i am lucky if I get 5 min to eat lunch or even go to the bath room, and it is worse for a nurse.. I still owkr there, but I trying to get on with eh FD somewhere..
As for the dealership, I have the land up for sale, have sent back most fo the shop equipment, all-be-it sufferign osme restocking fees, and i have talked to a lawyer about the whole deal.
As for the new business, it is metal polishing. I did it in the pasdt as something extra in the shop, nothing big, but small work like carbs and so on.. Well I kind of let it out that i do polishing work and as of right now I am back orderd 3 weeks in parts to make shine. I do a lot for the boaters, as well as some bike stuff. It is dirty work, but i find it to be relaxing.. Right now i am running it out of the garage at the house, and if it keeps up like it has been I will move into a bigger building and maybe hire someone to help.. Also looking into adding powder coating, but that will be once I move tho..

Sorry the bike business didn't work out for ya. My wife was in nursing school for about a year. The medical terminology and pharmacy stuff is killer textbook memorizing. My wife finally couldn't handle it, and she studied her butt off! Good luck on your new venture. One thing I'll say for ya, you come right back up swingin!

No reason to let life keep you down.. Remember at the bottom you can go up, or sideways.. I prefer up.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Good luck with the new adventures. My wife got out of the medical field this past year.I really think she got tired of people not getting well. She was in cardialogy for 15 years and then switched to oncology. She had enough. Now she is a teachers assistant with special needs kids. She does seem much happier. The bad side effect is she makes about 1/2 of what she use too.The good things are she's closer to home, seems much happier with life which makes our lives better. She even went on a ride with me this past Sunday.Note:the second time in over 41,000 miles.

Money isn't everything, you can't buy happiness, and some jobs simply aren't worth it. Eighteen months ago, I walked away from a $80k/yr job cause I was tired of working 60hrs a week for ten years, and My 90yo Mom needs looking after.
Priorities, what's important to you? That's all that matters in the long run.
Wish I had all the answers, Uncle Charlie

I may not have posted about it but Angelis and I were just talking about you Sunday. He still thinks you have your shop and was going to send you some work on his "secret" Triumph custom project. I'm sorry about the business but I'm glad you have such a good attitude about it and wish you the best, d_d.

Oh dont get me wrong, I love medicine, but "hospital" medicine and "street" medicine is 2 totaly diffrent things. In the street it is do what needs to be done, and do it now. In the hospital it is ok patients needs this, lets first put it in the computer, then wait on the Dr to get it, or to call back, then get the orerds, then get the meds, and then finaly treat the patient.. Maybe I am use to thinking and making choices on the fly.. Oh and something really funnt, I could not start a IV in the hospital no matter how many times I tried the first week.. I just could not get it.. But in 15 years of ridding in ground and air ambulances going 70+MPH down the road I only missed 4 and that was beacuse the patient flinched.. I found it kind of funny..
As for the money thing.. Yeah I am walking away from a good deal of money, and having a 150K in education paid for with no strings attached. But I just cant see my self being happy in the hospital setting. Would I be happy back on a ambulance? Yes and no.. If I would have stayed on the gorund I would be a shift supervisor, or even in the big office by now. But that was not where i wangted ot be. It would be hard to take orders from people i helped trained if you know what I mean.
I have allways enjoyed the Fire Dept. I got my start working for a FD that was EMS also.. When I left there I became a vol ff for a number of years. I dont want to say I enjoy going to house fires, fact of it is, if someones house is on fire, it is the worst day of someone life. To me there is more of a bortherhood with firefighters. In EMS it is very cut throat, and it starts at the top..
Now with the polishing stuff, I find it soooooooooooooo relaxing, throw on my coveralls, put my ipod on a rock shuffle, put my face mask on and go to town..
I have doen a lot of soul searching and feel this will be best for me. Oh and I put 10 years in the FD and I can retire.. Seems my state retirement follows me lol.

If I could get my wife to leave PA and all her relatives, I'd be happy to chuck my suck job and man the buffer next to you..... Making dull things shiny is theraputic.
Like the song says, You can't please everyone so you've gotta please yourself.
Best of luck.

My brother is the Aiken manager for Palmetto Ambulsnce I know they are always looking to help, but it would mean you would have to move inland. And if you want to come to Aiken the local independent shop that did all of the work on my bike just closed and there building is up for rent. They had plenty of work, just with 4 owners they could not decide how to run the shop.

I spent the first 20 years of my adult life chasing a buck, 60 hrs a week +. I had a wife that didn't appreciate any of it. Later, and for ten years now, I've gotten off the merry go round, got a great wife and try not to work more than 32 hours a week. Less money, way less stress and with good, clean livin, happier than a clam most of the time. Money ain't where it's at. A good wife and a good bike, that's for me!

Maybe start your own specialty EMT business along with your polishing business? Either way, you're the boss. But, this way, you can have and work out the best of both worlds that you desire...
Good luck however! :-)

Starting my own ambulance would be nice. But it is a nightmare of paper work, and billing.
lets take my last job. We were a privtae company contracted by MUSC for flights. What this ment was we were paid 100% for the calls we ran for them. As in if we flew a patient into MUSC we got paid for the flight no matter if the patient could not pay for it.. The hospital would worry about going after the patient for payment not us.. In a perfect world this would be great, however nothing is perfect..
A good friend of mind is the director of a local ground ambulance company. 80% of his day is spent chasing debtors. Yes their insurance says they will pay, however when it is found out it is not a emergent transport it falls back on them.. Not to mention it takes months to get paid by medicare, and medicare.. A transport you do today, might not get paid for untill early fall..
This does not even get into setting up inservice training, outfitting each ambulance with equipment, as well as findign a med controll Dr so you can care and treat patients..
See as a EMT, Paramedic, or any street care giver you work under a Dr's license.. Yes you are certified, how ever wiht out that Dr stating he will accept blame you can not treat patients..

I have the same problem with road side asst. firms, like credit card companies and AAA and such who offer towing coverage. I insist on a corporate credit card to avoid it but if I accepted a P.O. number it took 2 to 3 months to get paid.
