I was trying to install the tall sissy bar this weekend and got three of the base screws on, and as soon as I went to but the last one in it would only go in about halfway. Looks like I need to break out the old tap and dye set and clean out the thread in the fender. How exactly do I remove the rear fender?

I took mine off without a problem to install the freak 3 years ago and as far as I can remember it's a tight fit but if you remove the bolts that are thru the chrome fender supports behind the upper shock mount and the 2 under the seat the fender should slide out after you unplug the wire harness for the rear lights (they should run behind the ignition switch). It may be wise to remove one bolt from each shock and let the rear tire hang while the bike is on a jack so you have more room to work. Just be careful not to scratch it.
On the other hand if the bolt fits without hitting the chrome you can chase the threads without removing the fender. Just run the tap in where the bolt should be and you should be golden. NR.

when putting those bolts back in start all of them before you snug any of them down allowing some movement to align the holes. If you want to remove the rear fender you should also loosen the bolts that hold the fender struts on to allow you to spread them some to avoid scratching the fender.

Yeah, tricky operation. I'm thinkin' next time I may pull the struts off with the fender.

You can get a tap into the hole without removing the fender. The strut holes are larger...

You know the airbox goes through the rear fender? That may cause problems if you are not aware of it.
