My next door neighbor just sold his Honda dirt/street bike and bought a Buell Ulysses. We’ve been talking all winter and I suggested he might want to look at the Tiger and the Speed Triple before he put down his cash, but of course he didn’t. He didn’t want to pay for a Harley logo on his new helmet and since the Triumph dealer is just a block or so away from the Harley boutique he went down there to buy one. Since he rode his new Buell into the Triumph shop to get his helmet he wasn’t exactly in the market for a new bike but he finally looked at them. Now he finally knows that the Triumphs are faster, more powerful AND cheaper. While I was looking at his new bike he talked about the Triumphs. Act in haste, repent at leisure. I only said nice things about his bike though.

Well, he does have couple of things going for him; Eric Buell makes a great handling bike and he'll be able to take that puppy way off the beaten path if he wants to. A new candidate for advrider.com.
Of course he could have done the same thing with some real style on a Scrambler.

some people are not tall enough(read: long legged enough) for Sprints, Street Triples, or Tigers.
so they have to look elsewhere to satisfy their lustandneed for speed. (ask me how i know...)

Everything I've heard about the Ulysses has been fairly positive. There is a member on this board, BKing, who has one and its has apparently become his bike of choice over his Speedmaster.
I bought the same style of bike, the Kawasaki Versys, back in January. But it has half the power and a much lower price tag. If I would have had the money, I would have gone with a Tiger, but the budget wouldn't allow it. I'm happy with my decision though.

A good friend and experienced rider got a Buell Lightning a few months back. You couldn't get it away from him with anything Triumph makes. And he test rode a Speedy & and a Speed Triple last year at Triumph Come Home.

So he told you he had buyers remorse? The Scrambler isn't even in the same class as that bike. Its a toy compared to that Ulysses. 100HP is a lot of power to take off the pavement. if you are into that type of riding that would be the bike I would buy.

Certainly the Scrambler is not in the same class. But the Tiger certainly is and the Speed Triple has about 30% more power. They both also cost less. The Buell also had straight street tires on it, not set up like the KTM or BMW adventure tourers.
I wouldn't say he has buyers remorse. But he was so hot to buy the Buell he never looked at anything else and now he seems to wish he had at least shopped around a bit.
On the upside. Now he has a bike he can go places on.

I think if he rides two-up much, he probably made the right choice. Neither the new Tiger or the Speed Triple look passenger friendly. That trick backrest-luggage rack item looks pretty useful. The test report I read said you can't be in much of a hurry, so sport riding (ala either the Tiger or ST) is out. I guess you need to know how the bike will be used. The Ulysses looks to be languishing in my area HD shops, and would probably fetch a lower than sticker price.

The speed triple is not a dual purpose bike. The Tiger would be the one to compare to I guess. The tires are strange. They ship with dual purpose thread exactly like the Tiger tires.
They have pretty much the same specs. Both are too tall for short people.

Did you all look at the Specs. The standard Ulysses without the bags gets 64 mpg hwy. They have a 1200cc Harley engine is that right?

It's their (made-to-spec by HD) Buell Thunderstorm 1203 V-Twin. It has a shorter crank pin, better oiling, and redlines at 7100 rpm. Power claims from Buell put crank horsepower at 103 hp and torque at 84 lb-ft. So yeah, in a nutshell the Scram isn't even close...it's just prettier.

Some of those HD's get pretty amazing gas mileage. My neighbor hits in the mid 50's with his punched out Deuce.

On dirt, that much power is a liability. The old 40 - 45 HP Triumph 650 would be better.

If you're riding in the dirt after long stretches on pavement, the KTM 990 Adventure is the bike to have. Either that or wait for the BMW 800GS. With 21 inch front wheels, both of those bikes are better designed for the dirt than the Buell. But I guess it just depends on how far you want to go in the dirt. For even more big horsepower dirt riding, there's also the KTM 950 Super Enduro, or the BMW HP2 Enduro.
It's great though that there are a wide variety of bikes to choose from. If you can't find a bike these days to fill your needs and float your boat, you're just not looking hard enough. IMO we're in the golden age of motorcycling as future safety nannies get their teeth into motorcycles, and emissions laws will further choke the choices down to nothing but water cooled bikes. There's also a good supply of used bikes, often the same models, with carbs instead of fuel injection if that's your choice.

The one to realy wait for for real dual purpose riding is the Tiger Cub coming out this fall.

I think a few Scrambler riders would disagree.

I added a new Ulysses to my collection last June. 7500 trouble free miles so far. It is not a dirt bike, but does good on the many forest access roads here in Colorado. Not the fastest, but the best handling street bike I have owned, it loves the corners. 2 up riding is great: comfortable, adjustable suspension. Great luggage. Cheap parts and easy to maintain. 50 MPG. A very fun bike. Wheelie monster, especially with a passenger. Erik Buell has done good. No regrets. ---Bob
