Someone on the Rat.net forums posted this website on modifying a garage door remote and mounting a wired switch on a motorcycle:
Garage Opener Modification
I completed the mod today, after experimenting on my wife's truck.
Previously, I had purchased a Genie brand key-chain remote, made a small bracket and had it mounted under my tank. A little cumbersome to reach, small chance someone else would see and steal it.
This mod took all of about 25 minutes to complete. I bought a black, momentary switch at Radio Shack ($2.50).
I mounted the switch on the black "wing" off the left fake air-cleaner. The remote is tucked under the wire cover beneath the seat, pretty weather-proof.
I mulled over putting it in my console, where the blank is located but one day want to relocate my driving lights to that area.

And, just what do you think your wife is going to do when she finds out you put a remote control door opener on her truck?

She always had a remote, it was velcro'd in her overhead console, but that wouldn't do, would it?

Oh, I thought you were experimenting with remotely opening the door on the truck. That could have some interesting effects.

We (friend & I ) already did that on her '96 Impala SS. We discovered the same platform Buick Roadmaster had a feature to flash the headlights on lock/unlock but in our Chevy's that wasn't enabled. First week we owned the car, the seats were stripped out, we connected a few wires and enabled that feature. She just shakes her head now when I break out the soldering iron!

Al,
Great idea!

I've taken that cover off before to get to the battery, but never thought about what a great location that would be for such a purpose.

Good job!

Idea was from the fellow on the Sabre website, I'm just good at copying! Very easy to do. With the Genie mini key-chain remote, there are only two places for the wire to be soldered.
I'm still searching for that marine switch like this one:

Sweet! I was fooling around with using the blank thumb button
on the throttle switch housing, but that was getting complicated and expensive. This is more like it.
There's a boat shop near my house so I might find the
marine switch even.
Thanks for sharing!!

Boat shop near me too.... Hmmm might have to look. Did you get the Genie switch because that's the kind of opener you have or because it is universal?

I have a Genie opener, the screw-drive model with rolling codes.
Let me know if you find a good marine switch. I stopped by one boat place today, but struck out. I'm going to see if my daughters boyfriend, who works in a Yamaha shop can find something for a jet ski or ATV.

So I'm looking for a momentary switch, eh? That a particular type of actuation or something? I'll check it out. I'm not sure what kind of opener I have, didn't install it... so I'll have to see what's compatible. Maybe it's the dip-switch style.

By the way, a friend of mine insists on shrink-wraping his car key-fob thing. So it's a gamble as to which button you are pressing, but it is waterproof.. so maybe you can just shrink-wrap the opener and stow it under the tank.

No momentary switch from the boat store, but they do have a great selection of rocker and toggle switches, including rubber boots to go over the toggle for weather proofing. Maybe if I ever get driving lights... I'm sure judicious use of shrink wrap and liquid electrical tape will make the radio shack momentary switch work fine.

Radio Shack Momentary Switch
This is the guy I used, in stock at my local Radio Shack. Similar in function to a horn button, completes the circuit, than a spring cuts the circuit.

That's pretty inovative with the shrink wrap. Must be the mother of all shrink wrap tubes, I've only seen about 1/2" size!

I think it is fine underneath, both connections covered tightly with shrink wrap tube. I'm afraid if moisture enters the top of the switch, it will make contact inside the switch, turn the remote on and drain the battery pretty quickly. The weatherproof ones are sealed with a rubber boot on top. It would probably work fine, but one good soaking might do the trick.

Well they are cheap enough, I'll go grab one, crack it open and see if maybe I can internally waterproof that switch, ya know? AS for the shrink wrap, he works for a submarine manufacturer... He's send me 3 foot lengths of like 1 inch shrink wrap before!!

I was considering slathering some dielectric grease around the outer edge, can't hurt and might repel enough water to keep the inards intact.
All this work for a garage door opener, maybe my wife was right!

Found a marine all-weather switch today at Graingers in VA. A little pricey, probably should have ordered the one I referenced earlier. Switch and boot cover were $26:

Hmm, typed in Hubbell Horn switch and found both switch and the boot for $6 each at:
Hubbell Switch - cheaper!

Oh well, I'm happy to experiment with my hard-earned cash for the list cause!
