Hi, guys. I'm thinking of cutting my rear mudguard and relocating everything. Has anyone mounted their plate on the side of the bike (pics?) or can anyone offer opinions as to the best way to go about it? I'm hoping to make the frame/bracket myself and to include a hinge so, when I'm parked up, I can fold it flat against the bike. I should point out that the pillion-peg hangers are no more and I hope to use one of the hanger-mounting points for my indicators, although if I've got to use these for the plate bracket, I'll find somewhere else to put the indicators. Also, (although I'm not really expecting anyone to know), how much air passes the side of the bike, behind the legs? I just wanna know how secure/strong the bracket should be. Cheers, Neill

You are joking are you....they are looking mighty fine, just on my bike!!!
But seriously, I've seen a side mount bracket on an American accessories site, and the indicators can go through on the side shiney bits - the things that hold the rear mudguard up. I'd go looking through photopost, but I can't.

03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel...
06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel...
09 America - It's very blue....

Those side mount plate brackets are all over here in the US you can spend anywhere for $20 for a stamped sheetmetal version to a couple hundred US$ for an over priced billet name job. expensive one Very Expensive one

Boogieman has one specifically for our bikes for sale that mounts to the lower shock bolt. Paschal used an aftermarket one and mounted to the axle bolt. Too bad photopost is down.

Echoance, I have a side mount I've never used that I could photograph for you; it's for a US plate though so you'd likely have to adjust the dimensions to suit. Like Boogie's unit it mounts to the lower shock bolt.

Our Side Mount, originally designed for the R3, fits perfectly on the AM/SM - http://www.newr3.com/html/sidemount_license_plate.html. Of course this fits US plates only... -brent

I have a sidemount plate & taillight combo, that was homemade. All you really need is a piece of sheetmetal cut to the size of your plate with a small tab coming off the side that you bend at a right angle. Pretty much like this... Mines just thin sheetmetal that you can cut with tin snips, and painted black. Nothing super fancy, but it gets the same job done as the shinny expensive ones. Let me know and ill email you a picture, because the photopost is still down.

For those that have done this, what type of mods did you do for the lights?

Check your state laws, this one would get you a nice fine in PA, you are required to have the plate lit up at night.

No need for the picture, Tom, as the one you've posted shows me just what I need. Thanks, anyway. All I'm really after is something simple but I wasn't sure how sturdy it'd have to be. I've got some LED strips to replace the tail/brake lights (one for tail, 1 for brake) and I'll be buying some number-plate bolt LEDs to illuminate the plate. Will keep you all posted of my progress.

Very easily addressed by using LED license plate bolts.

Also I'v read somewhere recently that some states are passing laws requiring plates to be mounted horizontally. Seems like maybe delaware or maryland may already have a law in place.

Most states have that law in place, many are threatening stricter enforcement. Another fine example of the man beating down us bikers. I went a whole summer with no plate or mount on my Norton(it was registered, the plate was on my workbench). Once a local cop followed me for miles then into a gas station where he got out of his car and admired my bike without ever mentioning my lack of properly mounted proof of registration. I guess if your bike looks real good no one sweats the little stuff. Of course when I was a teen he'd have done a body cavity search.

Hi, there is a side mount mentioned in this months BSH. It is from the States, but apparently, the guy will do a right hander for a full sized UK plate for no extra charge. It cost $80 plus $26 postage. Here is the link http://www.fabkevin.com/tailight_brackets.htm

Thanks for your replies, folks. As I stated in my original post, I intend to make my own bracket and I was after input on design and locating it, etc. The links were a big help in this regard and I'm just waiting on a solo seat (I might alter my stock seat) so I can get stuck into modding!! Neill
FYI: in the UK, there are 2 types of MOT's (a yearly test to ensure the roadworthiness of a vehicle): full or daylight-only. The full one requires an e-marked number-plate light. The daylight-only one is the same with the exception that the vehicle doesn't have any lights at all, including the number plate light. You can only ride it between dawn and dusk and as long as visibility is good.
