My dealer hands them out with each filter sell. I can't understand the reasoning behind re-using.
You can risk re-using a cheap washer and sacrificing a crankcase full of expensive oil - or - change the thing each time as recommended and be fairly confident you'll never lose a drop. Just my 2c.

If I wasn't confident I wouldn't do it. The washer on my BMW is about 15 years old now and that one doesn't leak either.

Two oil changes on my America, no leaks. The pressure at this seal has to be very low, so I can't anticipate any problems reusing washer.

Reused mine once so far, and not a problem. The washer is soft enough to form a seal more than once. Also for some of us the dealer isn't just "right around the corner". I would prefer to have a sealed bolt like on my truck. Haven't looked real hard, but I'm sure there is a vehicle out there with the same threads that has that reusable rubber O-ring.
