Sometime back I wrote that when the gf is on the back I would get some oscillation or strange vibration at about 55mph last summer. (she's 5'6 and 125, I'm the fat one)Later that summer I noticed it came on at about 45mph. Almost all the responses said too get a new tire since that one had about 12k on it at the time. So I've recently just put a new tire on the '04 speedy, the same lazertech and at 45mph with the gf on the back the vibration is still there but goes away after 45mph. So any ideas of what is causing this? Should I rachet up the rear shock? are the front bearings bad? When I had the tire replaced and balanced, I also asked them to check and adjust the steering head bearings. Thanks in advance.

Check tire pressures, I use the standard shocks and two up I have them as stiff as possible..

Metzler: 110/80-18 ME330 - 38psi (ME330 are no longer being made and have been replaced by the Lasertech) 170/80-15 ME880 - 40psi
It may not help but try the above pressures

Check rear tire alignment and be sure everything is straight and tight in the front end. If those don't work then start looking at wheel bearings and swing arm bearings. Be sure you have the tire on correctly (can't remember if those were directional or not) and balanced right.

Also check for a warped front brake rotor.

I'm with Ian here. Are you certain the forks are settled square? If the rear tire is a little out of alignment and the forks aren't square this could occur.

I agree. With all my bikes, whenever I had any front end oscillation (especially two-up) I jacked up the rear shocks a little at a time and it nearly always disappeared. I have especially noticed it when touring (2-up + baggage) although strangely enough ... never on the Speedy (but that may be because I have the Progressive 440's which I have already jacked up somewhat).
After all, it makes sense that a bikes geometry changes when 2-up (since you have already mentioned that this normally only happens when your GF is on the back) and sometimes just slightly ... is enough. Try it, it's a quick one ... if it works.
Warning: Do not overdo it because then you will get slightly wobbly handlebars (a mini tank-slapping sort of effect).
