I'm looking at a 2003 Speedy on E-bay with 21k miles, 418 shocks, a small National Cycle screen and Willie and Max bags. The buy it now price is $4500. That's below retail KBB price, and about what NADA lists it for. Deal or no deal? Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayIS...A:IT&ih=012

Dont look like a bad deal to me. You be the judge, I bought my 03 last year with 2,400 miles, painted, lowered, modified for $6000

kbb trade in is $3,890. Don't use retail $5,645.
I would be bidding on that one! Remember though that you will have to put a chain kit on it, maybe a cush drive, possible tires too. 24K would indicate that it is on it's second set, toward the end of the second set too. Possible brake pads. Budget 7 c-notes.
bottom line you will be paying 5,200 bucks for the speedy if you purchase the speedy for the buy it now price. 4,500+700

The tires are good, going by the picture. New or almost new. I just got a reponse back that said he was getting only 30-33 MPG! What's up with that? You folks with SpeedMasters, what kind of mileage do you get? (His bike has been re-jetted with an aftermarket exhaust. He said he put the 17-tooth sprocket on it to get his mileage UP.)

You can't really go buy the photo on the tires, you have to inspect them first-hand to see if they have any micro-cracks from age. The gas mileage is really controlled by the right hand, his is a might heavy

I get 40+ MPG and I like to keep the revs up. I do not think I could drop to 33 if I tried.

45 to 50 most times, the lowest has been 42.

I am running slightly lean and have the 18t front sprocket. On the freeway, I average about 53. I am going to guess that guy is running way high rpms. I usually cruise at about 5000 rpm.

What Moe said about the chain and stuff. At 24,700. I had to replace chain, cush drive, rear brake rotor and pad. It probably needs brake fluid changed and a service to adjust valves also. As far as mileage, I've been getting 43mpg consistently since day one. Unless he has done some heavy mods on the engine that is low.

Well, let me put this way Dan....That's about an average price for a nice used WAY ABOVE AVERAGE motorcycle(i.e., a Triumph Speedmaster)
Now the question is: Would you like to own and ride around on a "way above average" motorcycle???....HUH?!

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

The bike looks good, but he's kind of scared me off with the 30 - 33 MPG. I'm not sure what he's done to get mileage like that. He said it got "almost 40" when it was stock. Plus it's unlikely I could get things put together by the end of the auction. I would have to sell my S40, get down to Corpus to look it over, all in the next week. Not to mention convincing my wife that I really, really needed to do this.
Probably not happening. Maybe if he doesn't sell it this time around.
Thanks again for all the input. One day I'll have a Speedy or an America.

Maybe you need to discover if the seller has the math skills necessary to accurately determine MPG, or is he a product of a public education?

Maybe he's fat like me. MPG drops considerably when you add a couple extra hundred pounds...

I agree. I weigh 300lbs, and I get 38-40mpg. I suppose I'd get 45-50 if I wasn't so fat.

I would not do the buy it now deal, let it bid out till the the auction is about to end. I don't think it will get over 35-3700 in bidding.
If you want it now I would send him a mail and offer him 3800 or so. NADA is what dealers are selling them for not private sellers. Private sellers generally get the loan/trade value.
Nice time of year to ride one back from Corpus

That would really only work if you knew what his reserve price is. If the final bid is below his reserve, then he doesnt have to sell.

When all else fails, ask... I emailed the guy and asked him what his reserve price is... $3900.
