I have a chirping noise<best way I can describe it> around 50 mph in 5th gear. When I accelerate a little it gets higher pitch then seems to go away. I have had it since the bike was new. The bike has 3300 miles on it now. When I pull in the clutch the noise stops. So I think it is coming from the transmission. Is this normal?

Mine sound more like a single note and it happens a 71mph / 4100rpm. It happens at about 4100rpm in 3-5 but most notable in 5th. Search the archives because we had a thread going about it 3-4 month ago I think.
The jist was that it is preculuer to the bike and most people experience it.
Any one else out there that can confirm my statement or expose my daftness?
Johnny

Johnny, Well first of all, those are two distinctly different endevours....BUT, I'm guessin' that the noise that you and dowop(BTW...Dion and the Belmontes were as close to perfection as it got) are hearing the gear whine from the primary. At those certain RPM ranges the "symphony" coming from the bike's left side is most likely due to the straight cut gears located there that connect the power from the crank to the transmission.
T'ain't nothing to worry about.

I just hum "Alice's Resturaunt" to the pitch of the whine @ 70mph... Kinda high though.

Are you sure it's mechanical and not an exhaust leak???

dowop,
I just posted another thread about me and Mike replacing his broken belt and there is something I found out. In the literature Mike brought over from Gates, they said that most noises from belts are due to minute misalignments.
Don't know if this helps, but it may be of assistance.

I also fought a "chirping noise" for a long time. I think it was one of the 2 issues.
1) I noticed after rejetting that the stock hose clamps on the intakes were bottoming out before really locking the intakes in place. I feel I had a small intake leak. Replaced them with the SS ones from Brent.
2) Also noticed alot of chirping (sounds like a cricket)when I had the 45 mains in, mostly in the 1/4 throttle range. It went away after going back to the 42s, and getting the A/F ratio correct. Chirping... could it be the sound of the cylinders being cooled by too rich of a mixture?
All my chirping seems to be at bay now.

Do you still have the air injection system installed? That can chirp. Also, as someone else pointed out, the primary drive gears tend to sometimes make a chirping sound under load. Most of this will go away if you get loud enough pipes.

Thanks again to all. I do have the AI removed. When I pull in the clutch the chirping goes away. In otherwords when the noise starts,if I pull in the clutch & rev the bike the noise is still gone. When I drop it back into gear it is back. Usually it is audible between 3000-4000 rpm. I am running Thunderpipes with stock jetting. I assumed that since the chirping stopped when I pull in the clutch that is in the drive train. Thanks again. You guys are the best.

You wouldn't by chance have a passenger seated behind you while all that chirping is going on would you?

HEY Jack,
You might have something there.
The passenger is not there very much, but when she is there is more of it.
Thanks.
