getting ready for some pre-season maintenece i usually use a couple tie down straps suspended from the cieling and attatch it to the handlebars to hold the bike upright for easy handling.

i noticed that the front forks have alot of travel expanding as the weight is removed, then i stood back and started thinking the bike looks good with that attitude. maybe a couple inches longer in the fork length. out of curiousity what would it take to make the forks stay there, longer springs..?? has anybody done this..?? BTW its a bonneville america that im speaking about.

i also realize the america suspension is set soft for the ride, but i think the front forks could be a little stiffer per my taste anyway.

its not to hard to do.just remember that there is still a bunch of spring pressure on the fork caps even with the front wheel off the ground.your handle bars may be in the way too.i stuck some washers that fit in the tube under the spring caps to raise mine.

Not longer springs, stronger springs.
A higher spring rate will make it sit up higher,
but it will be a rougher ride.

a longer spacer on top of the springs would do it too. Thing is then the tire wouldn't follow the road as well, when you go over a bump or over the top of a rise the front wheel actually drops and maintains contact with the road. If you do what you are saying it will no longer do that. Wouldn't imagine it would too good on the internals either.

You could achieve this without upsetting the balance by increasing the weight of the fork oil from 10w to 15w.

I put some Ikon progressive springs in mine which are longer than the stock springs. After making spacers that compensated for the difference in spring length, the bike sets a couple inches higher. The ride is rougher but the front tire seems to maintain contact with the road very well. Curves very well... superior to stock and very smooth at high speeds. I got my Ikon suspension parts from newspeedmaster.com.

Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin
