I'd like to paint it. Is it worth it? Are bearign races and small parts going to fall out and roll under my deck? Am I nuts?

NAh...easy...go for it! The bearings were not sealed but they are not loose either.

OK I'll think about it I have a manual too, I can look up the procedure and see what I'm in for.

Benny...I removed my front end once and was expecting you to get more responses BUT if I was going to do what your planning here is what I would do (roughly)...

* remove handlebars from upper yoke as an assembly (put a towel around your tank as you will probably lean it back onto the tank).
* remove top nut and upper yoke assembly.
* loosen the two "real" top nuts that hold the yoke in place.
* remove forks (one by one or as a whole...your choice).
* slip the lower yoke out the bottom.

If your doing this alone remove the forks one by one and not as an assembly unless your going to have help re-installing them as an assembly.
Also if you lean the bars back onto the tank or anywhere near it...COVER THE TANK and zip tie the bars so they are secure.
One last thing...get some paint sticks to put in the brake caliper...bleeding those sucks!

Hope this helps...

Thanks dude. I have removed the forks before... Not a problem. Just never done the yokes. I could use a fork oil change, and I'm gonna try my hand at painting the lower forks (if it sucks, I'll consider powder coat down the line), so I'll probably remove them one at a time to make the oil dump/paint easier. I also figure the lower yoke wouldn't look as obviously rough if I paint it!
