Time to spend some of the overtime money I've been saving all winter. What is the big difference between the series besides price? I ride 1 up most of the time and weigh about 165 lbs. Occasionally my daughter will go for a ride with me but she is only about 120 lbs. Most of the times I'm out of the city and into the country. Sometimes lost on some rough back roads.I do tend to ride a little to the aggressive side when out alone. As there is a pretty substantial price difference I am really wondering on which way to go. Looking for some input from people who have maybe had the lower end 412's and the higher end 418's and 440's. And are they the better choice than an alternate manufacturer. Will also be doing the fork springs at the same time. Thanks

If I had the opportunity I would do the front end first and ride a little before I decided on the rear shocks since it seems you have the money to go with any price. I did both ends at the same time with 412s and standard length front springs and it really improved the ride, but, the front springs are the most dramatic of the two improvements and it might help you decided if you need more complex shocks (418s 0r 440s) or if you need more chrome to go with you 412s and springs

I have had the opportunity to ride our bikes with the 412's (lowered) and the 440s. Without a doubt there is a huge difference between them. The 440s are well worth the $$ if you have the extra cash.

Yes they are covered but exclusive of the following:
o Excluded from coverage under this warranty are the following:
+ Damage caused by misuse, abuse or neglect + Damage caused by improper installation, use in an improper application or use in conjunction with other devices such as lowering blocks + Normal wear and tear + Damage caused by anything other than defects in material or workmanship + Damage caused by use in racing
Just nice to know information.

I have the 440's and the progressive front springs. The 440's made a nice difference when I changed them and got them adjusted to my weight but I do think that the front springs made more of a change in ride and especially front braking charicteristics over the stock front springs. If you were limited on funds you should start with the front springs IMO. Great set up with front and rears (440's) combined though!!!

Also, not covered by the lifetime warrenty on the 412's, is oil leaking out of them. They will however rebuild them for you for more than half the cost of a new set, with no warranty however on the rebuild...Ask me how I know..My first set of 412's lasted eleven months.

Progressive shocks have a one year limited warranty. The lifetime part is strictly for the springs themselves, none of the other parts (seals, housings etc.)

Here is a direct update I just got from Progressive. 412's: One year warranty on material workmanship. If they start leaking up to one year and they are the right shock for the bike and you are original owner, AND have receipt they will replace them or repair them no cost except the shipping to them. If after the one year within a couple of months, or you don't have receipt or are not the original owner they will charge only cost to repair as mentioned above. 440's full lifetime with exception of exclusionary abuse and normal wear. If they started leaking, they would replace them. Hope this helps. eddy

Good to know, their site says differently though. I actually have one of mine (440AIS) leaking ever so slightly. I guess I'll have to dig out my receipt and give them a call.

The 440s handle so well, you can literally ride atop road seems all day long, and the bike fairly ignores them. The old stock shocks would send the rider to & fro as if there was a hinge in the frame. Scary.
The only slight draw back I've found to the 440s is the regular springs are a might soft when two up, if one of the occupants is (ahem) girth challenged.
One glomox at 260 lb + da wife at 130 lbs = bottoming out. One glomox @ solo does not have these issues.

Here is more NICE TO KNOW Info that I got from Progressive in response to Bucky's post. Not information that I have seen anywhere but in trying to answer someones question I evidently asked the "right" question of Progressive.
The 440 shock for our bikes as the same weight formula as the 412's. To simplify, If you ride with total weight of you, passenger and gear at 440lbs (the weight limit of the bike) for more than 50% of your riding, or your personal weight is 230+ lbs you may need the Heavy duty shocks for your bike.
Problem here being...they do not make a Heavy Duty shock for the 440 model. If you fit into this category you may better served with the 412.
So that is why Bucky and others may have less than a desirable ride with the 440 in this load range. But as he say's when he is solo, it's OK. Hope this helps.

So eddy, if I'm hearing you correctly, as part of the deal as a trusted vendor you'll offer to inquire what our riding companions weigh?
Good luck with that!
