Leather isn’t just for covering seats.
Learned something new this weekend
Used some black leather, adhesive spray and a steamer to cover two of the three plastic pieces on the left side of my SM. It was easier than I thought to stretch it into place especially, around the key switch where I just knew it wouldn’t work. The 3M spray adhesive was key and having the leather pre cut.
The look is pretty subtle given the look-like-leather grain in the plastic. After two years in the sun the plastic was looking a bit weathered.
I’ll have to see how long it last. I can always just recover it now.

Looks good. Somebody used leather to cover their fork shrouds and it looked equally cool.

Looks good.

What's covering the battery?

I came across a small sheet of perforated 316 stainless steel material. I have a small metal bender. I cut a notch into the plastic cover to accept the ss cover material.

You did a great job. I like it. I covered my side cover with leather.

Leather was $6.50 for a patch piece (tandy leather)and the 3 M adhesive was about 12.00 for the can I used a fraction.
Nathan - I like your right side side cover - looks great.
Did you need to use any stean to help it fit up?
This stuff is fun and rewarding.I'm trying to plabn out how best to cover the battery box top cover. Not much room for thick leather along with my stainless steel box piece.

I didn't even think about using steam. I just used the spray adhesive and pulled it as smooth as I could, but from the looks of your parts the steam works wonders. There is no way I could have done as well as you did on those small parts. Great work!
