I just noticed a oil leak last week. it is coming from a plug that is located undeer the engine, in the middle, just ahead of the two forward, center main bolts. Does any one know what is behind the plug if anything other than oil. I can't find it shown or mentioned in the shop manual. I want to remove it and reseal it when i change the oil next time but would like to know if any springs are going to pop out when it is released. Thanks for the help. Gary

errr... you mean the sump plug? Nothin' back there but oil... ALL the oil. Get a new copper washer from your dealer to put there in place of the old one - it's supposed to be changed every oil change.

Might want to check to see if the plug is tight. If you let your dealer do your oil changes then have him check it. Like Sandmann said, there is a copper washer that can be changed with the oil. I've reused mine a couple times without any leaks. However, it is possible to lose that washer when changing the oil. I didn't know about the washer and the first time I changed my oil I found it in the bottom of the pan while pouring the oil back into a jug. Had some fun getting it back into place without draining all the oil. Lost about a pint, mostly on my hands, arms and shirt sleeves. Won't be guilty of losing that washer again though. Happy Trails!

Gary, If it's the little plug that has a wire going to it on the bottom side of the engine that would be your neutral safety switch. I think it takes a deep 10mm socket and you can first try to tighten it just a little ( Sorry I'm at work until tomorrow so I don't have my manual for the torque spec) If that doesn't work I replaced the little copper washer seal and it stopped the leak on mine. Nothing falls out when removed it's super easy to do. Hope this helps and hopefully someone that has access to a manual can give you the torque spec for that little bugger. T

Sorry for the delayed response, my computer was down for a few days. Anyway- this plug is not the sump plug. I have done my oil changes a number of times and your right you really need to change the alloy washer each time to stay 100% dry. This plug is a allen socket head plug that faces forward (like the sump plug)above the sump plug. it sits between but forward of the two center main bolts. I have a 2005 speedmaster for reference. I'm thinking it is one of those holes made to drill an internal oil passage then was plugged with this said plug(???). Gary
