All my buddies have H-D's & they are all have between 80 & 120hp! I was just curious if a Speedmaster could keep up with them & if so how. Power to rate ratio is all I could come up with. I'm thinking of buying one, because I like the bikes & like to be a little different, but I don't want to be left in the dust when we go riding!!!!!

if they are making 80 to 120 hp then it is far from stock.. I own a dyno and hurt peoples feelings with it on a regular basis.. Figure a twin cam 88ci engine with pipes, intake and a tuner makes on average 65 to 70hp. Thats at the top end, useable is around 50hp.
if your having a hard time keeping up ridding with HD's, look at the way you ride, the bike is more then enough to keep up with and beat a HD.

No problem keeping up with my two HD ridding buddies. One has a Roadking with a bigbore kit, and the other a 1200C. Most of the time we just cruise, but on occation we run them, and never had a problem keeping up. Sometimed I have to back off to keep from getting too close.

All my friends have harleys and customs too. I have no problems keeping up. In fact, some of them are still surprised that its an 800cc, one guy always asks me every time we are out. I think he likes to forget because I didnt pay $20,000 for a bike. Now, I do get dusted by that big rev-tech 110, but thats not a major concern, cause it only starts over 55 degrees and only runs about 90 miles on a tank of gas

Others with more knowledge will chime in but I have noticed the Triumphs are happy at higher RPMs. Unless Im really cruising slow I keep my RPMs high and the bike responds very well. After the basic mods (airbox, jets, pipes) the bike really picked up. Karen and I were riding one day and a pack of HDs past us (we were cruising). I was curious so I throttled it and kept with em the whole way...untill I relaized Karen wasnt following me anymore.

Cool, I appreciate the feedback! Like I said I haven't bought one yet, but it's at the top of my list. That was just one of my concerns, especially since I'm not that small of a guy(240lbs) & was just wondering if I could keep up! Thanks again!

I'm not having a hard time keeping up yet, because I don't own one yet! Most of my friends do have their bikes modified a good bit! I hope you don't think I was trying to dog the Triumph, I was just trying to get some info! I'm not trying to spread any bull!!!!

Not likely. A stock 100 inch Victory has something like 85 HP & 105 ft/lbs torque, and I haven't had a Harley pass me yet. The HD might have some low-end torque edge on the Speedy/America, but once you're up to cruising speed you can move right along. We used to cruise 2-up with a load of gear at 75-80 MPH, no problem. The revs are just much higher than a v-twin.

I road on a couple of Hells Angel sponsored poker runs last year and besides all the compliments from the DC HA's there and the crazy stuff on the hwy they do, I never felt like I was going to be run over and I passed a good number of them. My piped and jetted speedmaster will do 106-8 on the flat straights and that is about it for a stock HD as well.

My uncle is considering selling his Red '02 if you'd be interested in a used one. He's located in the Altoona, PA area.
Not sure how many miles the bike has, but I'm gonna say pretty low since he pretty much never rides.

Maybe! I only live about 2hrs from him, so it wouldn't be that big of a haul to get it. I'm not going to be ready until this summer at the earliest though. Do you know what he wants for it?

Don't know...I can find out for ya. I don't think he needs to sell right now...he's been threatening selling it for at least a year now. I'll put the bug in his ear, which will most likely either have him lean towards selling or realize he wants to keep it.

But does it have Billy Joel's signature on it, Mark???
From the sounds of it, I'll bet you can get a pretty good deal from Mark's uncle here, Chad. I'd definitely look into this if he's of the mind to sell it. These bikes are pretty much bulletproof, and so don't have any concerns about buying used.
Good luck.
(BTW...you better get used to the jealousy your Harley ridin' friends are gonna direct your way every time you guys park your bikes together somewhere and it starts drawing more attention than theirs do...sorry, but that's just the way it is...you'll see)

Nah...but once my or any relative of mine's rear end has graced the saddle, Billy Joel wouldn't even be worthy of such a priviledge.

Yunz don't have anything to worry about. The Speedy is 100-300 pounds lighter than a Harley, depending on how blinged-out the H-D is. The exception is the V-Rod, which will walk away from anything short of a Rocket III.

There is a combination of weight, rotating mass and gearing that makes it easier for a Triumph to keep up than you would think. The big twins weigh 60 to 300 pounds more than a Triumph twin and it takes power to move weight. The HD twin has 2 large flywheels in the engine along with an alternator rotor and a very heavy clutch assembly while the Triumph has a lighter clutch, a similar alternator rotor and no internal flywheel, so the Harley has a lot of metal to wind up and that slows acceleration. The big twins redline at 5500 and the Sportsters at around 6200 RPM. That means they have to be geared a lot taller to run the same speed as a Triumph. This means that the Triumph has more leverage to pull with, so it will make just as much force with a smaller amount of torque.
From personal experience, the 88 inch twin cam takes a lot of modification to keep up with my America. A 1200L Sportster will give it a run for its money, but will not leave it behind. A modified 96 inch Softail will pull a little better at the top end, but a 96 inch Roadking with the same mods won't keep up.

I'm 260 and My Speedmaster performs just fine. I have no trouble keeping up with any HD riding buddies on the highway and usually I have to wait for them on the twisty stuff .
And I love my 16 tooth front sprocket . The bike revs high so I can use the power band more efficiently. In fact, next sprocket change I may go to a 43 or 44 tooth rear.

Going up a mountain east of Phoenix,Az. I had a friend with a 2006 Electra Glide Harley touring bike riding with us.We were going 85mph up hill.People in front were leaving us and people were backing up behind us.He could not go any faster he told me later. While we were on the climb I finally just twisted the throttle a bit more and left him.He was not happy with this.I do have to say this about it,he ran that bike harder than I would have through the turns. After that trip he said he was getting a R3.He still does not have one and he totaled out the big Harley. He could not believe the Triumphs would leave him.His Harley was almost stock except for pipes.

I'm 6'4" 305 on a 06 America 790cc. I can run with most anything on the road without issue. It seems my bike gets stronger with every season. (debaffled stock slashcuts with personal mods, dynonjet springs, dynojet 126 mains, thruxton needles, 19tooth front sprocket.)
Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin

Mine goes a zillion billion MPH and I eat up GTOs for breakfast. Then I go looking for Repsols I think we have very respectable usable power up to 100mph. I don't need anything more for cruising. I also have a 19t front sprocket and simply love the taller gears.

My buddies rides: HD 1450? Dyna, 1200 Sporty, 1100 V Star, All of them get P"ssed at me for either passing them on the straights or out cornering them on the twisty bits. Funny enough the same things gives me great pleasure?
