Well, bought my first bike this weekend. Yes, it's an America, red, lots of chrome. Passed my test in November, but here in not-so-sunny England, much ice and rain means I have had to wait until now to pick it up. However, has anyone had experience of breaking the rubber speedo retainer on the front mud-guard? I'm sure it was intact when I picked the bike up, but isn't any more. Is there a better way of keeps it where it should be? Thanks.

You can get it replaced under warranty. I did. After my warranty expired and the replacement broke I bought the chrome one from newspeedmaster.com, although there are cheaper, if less pretty, options that I'm sure others will explain.

Welcome to the forum. They all break. I used a stainless eyebolt, couple of stainless washers, and two rubber washers for a long time. Then I bought one of Brent's ( newspeedmaster.com ).

Mine broke the first year. Got it replaced on warranty and the replacement has held up since. Most posts about replacements have also said that they hold up ok. They must have had a really long bad run.

Mine broke within the first month of new. the dealer installed a new one and it broke within a month. I super glued it and it broke in a different spot.
I made my own after seeing the price of the after market one. (can be seen in my photo album). I really like Drgnslyr's boat part but it must be chrome and not stainless if only $5.00.

DrgnSlyr,
I'm a sailer as well and have used 316 stailess to make a lot of parts for my bike.
I really like your speedo cable retainer.
You shouls appriciate my shift rod modification. You can see it in my photo album. I also like to use leather to protect areas on th ebike that get hit with road debris and have used leather to cover the wire harness where it is seen along the frame.

Hi Uncle Nobby. Mine's presently held together with a tiny stitch of wire. Off to the chandlers when I get time.

You can drill a hole in the rubber base and slip a black tie wrap through it.

Mine lasted for ages. It lasted the crash. It broke when being moved from here (my house) to my parents. On the grounds I've already spent too much on the 03 I'm refusing to buy one from any one and so the bits were overlapped and secured with a cable tie.
(And I could never spend too much on the 03 really.... just at the time I had no money left and now I don't think about it.)

And it's really good to see another Brit here!!! Welcome to the Madhouse!

Wow - what a response! Thank you all for your ideas. I will be ordering the chrome one, but a cable tie might do for a short while.

Anyone else had chrome flake off of Brent's?
I swear mine did it sitting in the garage.
Saw the flakes on the floor.
Been meaning to see about a replacement.

I put a cable tie on to hold it "for a short while", that was two years ago.

Took a few years, but yeah, the chrome peeled off on mine. Trying to decide what to do with it next. I kinda want a black one so I might strip it and powder-coat it black in my buddy's oven with his home powder-coating kit.

I live on the coast (salt spray in the air)- Chrome coming off of after market parts is very common and one reason I use stainless steel for my garage projects - polishes close to a chrome shine and won't rust or flake off - mostly will out live the bike.

I've had mine for 3-4 years before it peeled. I don't expect him to warranty it forever. If I bought it last year you bet I'd be asking for a replacement.

No I wouldn't either mine started to peel in about 6 months. He warrants chrome for 1 year or at least he used to.

Returned to bikes after 20 years. Picked up my 865cc TBA 4months ago. The bike is a pleasure to ride and corners real good too. I also had an issue with speedo cable clamp, got new stainless steel one from Tribal not cheap but great quality, looks a lot better than original Changed stock pipes for triumph short slash cut, vast improvement to sound, also had dyno jet kit fitted, that doesn't do the performance any harm either.
