New member here with a '01 Bonnie America.
Besides the obvious increased intake air flow and aftermarket exhaust, what are you guys running for more zip in the motor?
Any good cams out there with higher lift that anyone has used?
Could really find anything in archives.
Thanks for the help.

Thumperrr, First welcome to the board, second check out this site for a few more technical mods. I don't know of anyone on this site which has put in this big bore but a few have put in the cams. If your looking for a big bore that has been put on by some here try this other site. Good luck and keep us informed with anything you try.

Call these guys, MegaCycle Cams tell them you want a medium street grind for your cams. About $250 each if I remember correctly. I looked into having them do mine once. Now a local guy says he can do them for me too. I'm just real leery about screwing up $900 worth of parts. Maybe this winter. If you want your heads done, mine were done by Seely Engineering and Machine in Stanley, NY (585) 526-6663. He did mine for $100 cash when I did my big bore job. He is an old Triumph guy that owns a very nice high tech hot rod engineering shop, builds the fastest race cars around this area. He's also the same guy that said he could do my cams for me. He once quoted me a guestimate of $250 to do them with a mid street/drag grind. I admit, I don't understand the relationship with the cams vs hp/torque etc but he sure does. When he did my heads I was a bit leery until he started pulling several boxed off his shop shelves all with old Triumph heads in them that he had recently reworked for soem local racers. They looked like new and was very high quality work. Mine was the first "new" twin motor he has worked on but said he is very interested in doing some radical work if anyone is interested. We even talked briefly about building a Triumph flat track bike, his personal favorite project to work on. His eyes light up and you can see the guys is a rabid Triumph head just by talking to him for a few minutes.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

Recamming can be "tricky". Almost always, a different (i.e., bigger ) cam, will lessen bottom end power, while upping mid and/or higher end power.
When Dinqua says "medium street grind", what he means is a cam with slightly longer duration, but higher lift and faster lift rate. This will give you better midrange power, without sacrificing too much bottom end.
As a side note, I've got to say that most of the prices I've seen for regrinding a customer's Triumph cam are shockingly high! It wasn't all that long ago one could buy a brand new, V-8 car, steel core, roller racing cam for around $250. (Regrinding your race roller was around $100.)
I've not looked closely at Triumph twin cams to see if they have nonsymetrical lobes (opening ramp has a different curve from the closing ramp), but nonsym. lobe design has been all the rage for the past 25 years. You want this, no matter what grind you decide on.
Remember, if you recam, you will most probably need stronger valve springs, even if you don't turn more rpms!. The reason is that the faster lift rates of the HP cams "throws" the lifter up (in OHC cases, down) at a faster rate, which can cause valve float at a lower rpm than before. Add to that the higher total lift of the newer cam, and the tendency of users to take advantage of the higher rpms he can now turn, plus the additional weight of the newly needed thicker valve shims, and one can easily see the coming valve contact with the piston. Ouch.
Also, cylinder head porting will make your current stock cam more effective. A great companion mod with porting is the installing of bigger intake valves (stock ex. are OK).
If you are on a budget, the best things you can do to make your bike perform much better are to install a big bore kit and get the head ported. No need to turn those higher rpms with these mods, so your stock cam should do just fine.
If you want to do something more than these mods, get yourself a pair of those accelerator pump replacement carbs.

Has anyone contacted Competion Cams in Memphis, to see if they'll put a regrind on Triumph cams? Crane Cams in Florida would be a good place to check, too.

Someone got cams from South Bay Triumph installed in their bike back in June. He promised to post a dyno run but it hasn't materialized yet. I sure would like to see a dyno run with these cams as well as a dyno run with the 904 big bore kit.

The truth is, the cam should be your last modification. Do everything else you're going to do first. When you're done with that, THEN you hunt up a reputable cam grinder, take your bike in and see about getting a grind that matches what you've done with the engine and what you intend to do with the bike. Drag racing, flat track, road racing or just hauling arse down the highway all call for different valve timing. For that matter, you would want different cams for 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 mile drags.

Half mile drags: wow, been awhile on those! The late Mickey Thompson did some over 1/4 mile stuff years ago with a little streamlined front motor dragster. He used a Pontiac Tempest 4 cyl. engie and a special 2 cyl. engine from Tempest 4 banger, which he had cut in half.
He was making international standing start record attemps, by the way.
And yes, Greybeard is right-as-rain that the cams should be the last thing one messes with in modifying his Turnip.

This question always seems to come up doesn't it? :-) For myself, I can't wait to hear more from our Friend RCV regarding the ignition mods he did to his '05 Speedmaster. Got my dyno run scheduled for the 8th of October, so I'll see what my cams and carbs can do! Hoping for at least 65 RWHP.

Hi, 2 all trumpy owners,I'm proud to own 05 speedmasta, I have fited long slashcut (custom chambers brand) pipes rejetted and removed air injection, still waiting for the power to happen??Any proven mods that up the sting would be nice to know about. Not to many supliers down here in New Zealand.links to performance parts ,cams ,air filters, would be cool. What is the "freak" and who supplies?

You can get the Freak here, http://newspeedmaster.com/It has a pair of air filters that fit directly on the carburettors, a pair of large main jets, a crankcase breather hose filter, and brackets to hold everything that normally bolts to the airbox. With the airbox gone you get a huge increase in air flow into the engine.
