Joker, Someone recently started a thread about this subject. The theory was something to the effect that the more you adjust it, the more it stretched. I don't know about that, but maybe because my chain has over 16K miles on it and is stretched about as far as it can go, I haven't had to adjust it for about 3K miles. It seems to have stayed at the recomended "play" of about 1-2 inches for about that many miles.
Coincidence? I don't know....but I'm also starting to believe in other unexplained phenomenon lately too.
Like that "Roswell" thing.

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Every time I clean the chain I check the chain for adjustment. I keep mine set at 1" of play. Of course that's measured with the chain at it's tightest point(gotta roll the bike through one revolution of the rim). Might not be the right way, but I check at every 1/4 turn of rim. Since I go through rear tires because of nails(6 tires in 28,000 miles), my chain is usually in spec. I think I've had to adjust it only twice. Once around 2-3,000 miles after buying the bike new, and once about 2-3,000 miles after putting on a new chain.

Joker, I just replaced my stock not to long ago (about 16,000 on the clock) with a Tsubaka chain (a slightly higher load rating than the stock chain), and am testing this whole "non-adjusting" theory. I have made a couple small adjustments after a good break in period, and have it set at about 25mm/1" of play. I just rode it to Missouri and back with no adjusting (2071 miles in 4 1/2 days of riding in almost continuous 100+ degrees), and am going to measure it tommorrow. I'll let ya know if I have anymore slack than when I left.

Once in 10k miles. The chain was very loose at 1,200 miles when I bought the bike. Adjusted then and it's never needed any attention since.

Chain? What's that? I use one to pull my car out of ditches.
A word to the wise is not necessary. It is the stupid ones who need the advice.

I thought that was that big gold thing with the giant gold sprocket that you wear as bling bling when you head into Philly....

It's that thing that doesn't break after 10,000 miles and cost $175 for a new one(see post by John comma Friar)

Joker, after 2000 miles without touching it, it is at about 28mm at the taughtest section, so I'll leave it be.

At 23,000 miles my chain had been adjusted 3 times. Upon removal it was still good to go as were the sprockets. Having replaced it with the QPD belt system I'm no longer worried about the slack, stretch or oiling of the chain. The belt drive is the way Triumph should have built the TBA and SM to begin with. Worth every penny, and it costs quite a few to be sure. Smooth, quiet and clean. Way to go Ozzie.

Belt still needs to be checked often and possibly adjusted.

Everything needs to be checked often, not just the drive line. It's the nature of the beast. The belts don't require near the adjustment that chains do. I've been pleased as punch with the belt drive so far. After riding with chain drives since 1968 I'm glad to be rid of them. I don't miss the mess at all.

Greg,
What is the part number/specs for the Tsubaka chain? All I found was when you mentioned, "gold 525 chain" in the What a Tool thread.

Moe, I just double checked, and I obviously (as usual) don't know what the hell I'm talking about!!!! I have an RK 525 GXW chain, not Tsubaki!! DOH!!!! It has an XW ring, instead of an X-ring, which all looks great on paper, an so far ok in real life too. It is load rated at 8800 lbs, vs the 8050 (I think) that the DID chain is rated for. According to the DID literature, the 525 chain we had stock is good for up to 750cc bikes, the RK is rated up to 1100ccs...
