My rubber fender speedo cable loop broke on my summer trip ('03 Blue America). Are there any alternatives besides another stock rubber one and the newspeedmaster $59.95 chrome one? I thought maybe I could locate a Japanese stock replacement, but I'm not having any luck. Any ideas?

I'm not sure if they're any others that will fit but the nice thing about Brent's loop is the fact that you don't have to remove the cable to install it on the bike.

You can poke a very small hole in the side of the bracket and use a black zip tie. Lots of the guys in Ga had this and they worked fine. BUT the purdy chrome one from Brent is sooooo nice.

I had an eye-bolt as a temporary cheap replacement. I got a nut and some face-sealing washers and chopped the bolt down till it was just long enough to get a nut on the back. Worked fine, not as purdy as the chrome one (which I have) but it worked and wasn't plastic or rubber...

This has been a common problem mine broke during warrantee and again about a week ago. Other than looks can any other problems occur if you do not fix this?

The loop is there to prevent the cable from coming in contact with the pipes. It will melt them up and make a mess on your headers toot sweet.

Mines been broke for 3 years, has yet to touch the exhuast, but I've been lucky. Originally wasn't the chrome cable thingie from Brent $39.95? I meant to get one then. Now it is $49.95. It just seems a little silly to pay $50 bucks to replace something that originally cost a couple bucks at most. But it does look good.

You must have one of the newer clutch cables. I hear there were actually 3 different lenghts on them. Using up old parts and such, like to different sidecover thing, some say Bonneville America, some just America. I dunno, it's friday and I hear beer calling me...

Most, probably all of the companies that make tie wraps (plastic ties) also make a flat bit with sticky tape on the underside to tie stuff down to flat surfaces. One of those and a tie wrap should work long enough to save up for something more fancy. I think the stock one is probably an off the shelf item because the Enfields made in Injia have several of them.

I still have the eyebolt on like Benny did that I put on about 2 years ago. I painted it and the washer black. Also put a black rubber washer on between the metal washer and the fender so the paint wouldn't get scratched up. Having a Speedmaster, I like black parts, so I passed on the chrome one by Brent. Real cheap fix using the eyebolt. Looks okay too.

Thanks, Cat. I took your advice and went with the black P clamp. Looks great, but I'll probably be saving up for one of those NewSpeedmaster chrome ones. $60? Ouch!

When I had Barnett do my speedo cable in braided stainless, I had them shorten it by a half inch. Worked wonders!

$50 for a chrome loop is insane. sorry, it's just nuts. mine broke and i have a new one on the way via warranty. If it breaks i'll use a tie wrap or whatever. But $50 for something so trivial is for rich people, not me.

IKJ, All things are relative... if you saw the engineering that went into the chrome loop, plus the cost of chroming anything these days, the price is not out of line.... I buy lots of chrome things, and granted, it sometimes seems too expensive for what you get, but this piece from Brent and his Dad is bulletproof. A good looking solution to a factory problem... Everybody has their own standards.....

I agree with Grump. It's an awesome little product. But I suppose it's not for everybody. And I could swear it didn't cost anywhere near $50 when I bought mine.

IMHO: Most everything from Brent Is money well spent I have the chrome loop from Newspeedmaster on my bike and even the guys at my dealer thought it was a wise addition, since the stock ones are pretty much garbage and break if you just look at em wrong. Besides, the stock bikes we buy are just a starting point for spending more money to make them our own.

When mine broke last spring, I made one at work out of pyrex glass tubing and rod. Have a picture in my gallery.

Now if Brent would come out with a black one, that would be very awesome.

Hi David, I work with some glass, but not in it. Well, I have access to some damaged pyrex tubing from .5"-2.5". Is there anyway to cut this stuff? I've melted glass before and tried to make stuff, but you know what happens if the cooling rate ain't right. Ride Safe, Dennis

Dennis, Cutting glass cleanly above 1/2 inch is tough with out a wet saw with either a diamond or carborundum wheel. A tricorner file can score small tubing, wet the score and if the tubing is long enough, it can be snapped off. It still has to be ground smooth or fire polished. That requires a gas and oxygen torch. Not much help I'm afraid.

Mine broke within 6 months of getting the bike. I rotated the cable loop 180 degrees and then super glued the break. This way the glued part is facing forward and not where the speedo cable rubs against the loop.
My intention was to replace it with Brent's chrome cable loop when it breaks again, but it has been over 2 years since the repair.

Soren,
Brent recently said that they have "talked about doing some in black powder." Give him a shout and express your interest! Or start a specific thread?!
