maybe it is part of the highway that can be used for a emergency runway if needed.

look out.... alternate runway
But, what it really means is that there is an airport nearby. Kind of like there are hospital signs when you are near a hospital.

If you mean the airplane silhouettes that are painted on the highway every 1/10th mile then your talking about the markers aircraft enforcement use to measure your speed for ticketing purposes.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. Herm Albright (1876 - 1944)

I always thought it meant the road was part of the highway that can be used for a emergency runway.
but the "If you mean the airplane silhouettes that are painted on the highway every 1/10th mile then your talking about the markers aircraft enforcement use to measure your speed for ticketing purposes" makes a lot of sense.
What a mystery.

They serve as both a warning to speeders that the highway is patrolled by aircraft and a distance marker for airborn highway patrolmen to time speeders. They can't pace speeders with the airplane as they do with patrol cars because the airspeed indicator doesn't show groundspeed.

As a private pilot, I can assure you that if I have an emergency which requires me to put the airplane down anywhere other than an airport, then I'm not going to waste my time looking for little airplanes painted on the highway before I set it down. I'm going to make the landing anywhere convenient/appropriate (flat, firm, and unobstructed) in the immediate vicinity.
The symbols on the highway are indeed timing markers for airborne troopers. A diamond shaped yellow highway sign with an airplane symbol is a warning that there may be low flying airplanes OR (rarely) that airplanes may taxi across the highway/street at the intersection. The sign will indicate which.

Good to know. On highay 72 between Memphis and Huntsville there are quite a few of those little planes on the road. I will remember this next time i do that trip. I usually cruise along there between 80 and 90.
Think i might slow down a bit.

The most recent winners of the fabled 'Cannonball Run' used all kinds of assists to keep them from being pulled over. One of the tools they used was a friend who shadowed them in a light plane to keep watch and warn them of any troopers in the air or around the corner. The troopers in the air will time a car (using the little airplanes on the pavement) and radio another trooper on the ground waiting for the law breaker. The guy on the ground will then just wait for the car/truck/bike/moped to come along and then pull the offending commie scofflaw over.

St. Barth's was one of the islands I visited on a Star Clipper cruise I took a couple or three years back, and I remember seeing the airstrip and being thankful that I sailed in instead of flying. By the way, it was one of the most enjoyable vacations I've ever had: www.starclippers.com

The correct answer is that they are timing marks for Highway Patrol aircraft. Perhaps one of the LEOs on the board here will chime in. I've known this since the 60s when a friend's dad who was also a state trooper told us about timing speeders from an airplane.
And as GB mentioned they are made obvious so that drivers know the area is patrolled by aircraft.
They're more sneaky in some parts (like Nevada). They have hash marks on the shoulder at 1/10th mile intervals for the timing. Not nearly so apparent to drivers,,,,,or riders.

Yep! I'm pretty sure they're to tell people that there could be a "Flyin' Smokey" overhead looking for speeders, alright.
But unfortuantely that sign DOESN'T mean that they're up there looking for anybody making dangerous lane-changes by failing to check their BLIND SPOT, and/or making turns without signaling!
(but then again, I guess that second one might be a tad hard to spot from up there, huh?!)
