Just curious for those of you who have switched over to ape hangers, how much $$$ did you end up dropping on redoing all the cables and wiring? I was in the stealership the other day and saw some apes and just got to thinking about it...

I'm in the middle of the project right now. It's funny, because I was just going to start a thread on how much project was cursed. I'll run down the list . 1. purchased risers off ebay that didn't work. 2. purchased bars off ebay that would have folded in half at the first hard brake. 3. Purchased a set of Chubby 1 16" apes and just found out today that they had the wrong riser spacing. 4. Was shipped the wrong seat. I don't know exactly how much the cables are going to cost but I decided to just use black vinyl cables when I found out that steel braided would run about a hundred per cable. The vinyl cables will prbably run no more than 50bucks each. My apes cost 230, new retro grips were like 20, new risers were 150. Now figure in labor(I didn't feel comfortable doing it myself) which my guy told me would run no less than 375 and no more than 500. Add it all up and there you go. Just have all your ducks in a row if you plan on doing it. It will save you some heartache.

Wow. Sounds like more of a pain in the neck than its worth. I think the apes I looked at when I was at the stealer were 14" and were about $50.00. I thought that wouldn't be so bad, if I could do the project myself, and the cost of the cables wasn't too outrageous. Also, wasn't sure if I'd actually have to replace the risers or not. wouldn't if I don't have to.

I run apes and didnt find them that bad the local motorcycle wrecker made a clutch cable $25 for memory and less for throttle cables, wires i did myself easy to do as well and bars i bought at a swap meet for $20 not hard or expensive in my experience

It depends I guess on which way you want to go. After seeing what cheap bars look like and feel like I chose to spend more for quality. There is really no comparison when you see the 2 side by side.

There are much cheaper risers out there that are good quality starting at about $40. You can achive the braided steel cable look with braided SS sheathing from an auot parts store. If I remember right it was about $4 for 6 or 7 feet of it. Just finish the ends with some shrink tube.

Back in 2002, I had my bars swapped.... the labor and extending cables, new brake line (braided), throttle and clutch extended (locally done) cost me $246. Its about 1/2 labor and 1/2 parts costs. And they only charged me for 2 hours labor - it might have been a little longer, but my former Triumph shop LIKED me!
The mini-apes cost me $76 - they are Flanders bars that I purchased at the HD shop.....took some trial and error and I sat on a lot of bikes. I did not put any additional riser on - its stock.
All the wiring is still on the outside - so its basically a stock setup. 6 years later its still all there and working just fine!

Someone else mentioned some 10" apes on their bike but I've run searches and don't find the thread. I'm needing to do the same. I need to change the riding position. I have a bad back (4 budging discs and cracked vertebra) and this bike is not fun to pilot right now. I need to change the geometry (and give it some "longer" legs- but that's another saga) If I can't change the "taco" riding position, I'll have no choice but to trade it for a ST or Tiger come spring. I got out of the sport bike/ sport touring market because my hands went numb after an hour, but I can't make it an hour on the SM lol...
If someone remembers the thread with the pics of the 10" apes, please post or PM me...

Nah. It was one with some 10" chrome bars on a bike. Thanks for searching though. Two searchers are better than one...
