Back in the monozoic age, in a land before Ipods and gigabytes made their way into everyday language, there was AM radio.... FM was a fledgling technology and words like stereophonic and (gasp) quadraphonic were only spoken by audiophiles and technical gurus... In this ancient time of innocence, there were many songs that were not easily catagorized.. were they pop? Rock 'n' Roll? novelty? What do you other geezers remember? I have a bunch.... but I'll only mention a few. Patience and Prudence - Gonna get along without you now The Four Blobs - The Blob Ran-Dells - The Martian Hop Bosstones - Mopety Mope Brook Bond Food - Red Rose Tea Guy Marks - Your red scarf matches your eyes C'mon.. Show your age!

Hey Arky. First verse was,
"Hey Arky if you see Okey, tell him I found a job for him in Californy A pickin' up prunes"
And, I used to really like Across the Alley From the Alamo.

Well, in the case of THAT era, Wade(and I ONLY know this because I used to listen to "Dr.Demento" every sunday who'd play these kinds of records on his radio show)...there was this very funny gentleman(often doing bits with Bob Hope back in the day), one Jerry Colonna....
And I remember one of his novelty songs really cracking me up when I first heard it..."Autumn In Azusa", an ode to that "lovely town nestled up against the San Gabriel Mountains" here in SoCal.
("..ah YES! There's EVERYTHING here from A to Z in the USA, in AZUSA!"

How 'bout the "One-eyed, One-horned Flying Purple People Eater"
I always felt safe; not being purple and all.
And "My Friend The Witch Doctor".

Really like the Purple People Eater Song. When i was just a tot i found Purple People Eater Meets the Witch Doctor 45 single in a closet where i lived (left over from my older brother i was told)...The A side was Chantilly Lace by the Big Bopper. Played the heck out of those!
BTW: Purple People Eater was by Sheb Wooley who played the scout on Rawhide (Pete Nolan), and recorded some comedy records under Ben Colder. Born here in Oklahoma, same town as Roger Miller who was related to Sheb, in Erick, OK. Now that i mention Roger Miller, there's "Dang Me", "Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd", among a ton of other songs, of course including the great "King of the Road".

Yeah, unfortunately the days of good AM stations are pretty much over, and the early days of FM were way better, too, before Clear Channel came in and took it over. College stations can have more free reign since they're not run by the dictates of a corporation i guess. Used to be an AM station out of Little Rock that had a program called Beaker Street that was fantastic (google it, it's legendary). Used to hear Stones and Hendrix bootlegs on FM in OKC. Now, it's the same tunes over and over and over. So, no, i rarely ever listen to radio anymore unless i'm in the car...and i usually try to have some recorded stuff on hand.

The early days of FM rock were great. The first one here came about when they switched from longhair music (which is all there was on FM) to album rock. No top 40 crap, just rock album tracks. Every Friday and Saturday night at 11:00 they would play two or three albums in their entirety without any interruptions . One of my friends had a very good reel to reel recorder, so we up every weekend taping albums.

Sure do! Just mentioned that 3 posts up. And, yeah, it was like a heavy FM station, but was AM.

All we had was AM back then, or 8 track. Nobody had a car new enough to have FM. Beaker street at night and WLS top 40 or 8 track. Can't even remember some of the song titles WLS played, the streak and the one about "if you don't give me the deed to your ranch" another Ray Stevens' song. Long time ago.

I forgot about "Along Came Jones"
Remember "Life Is A Rock But The Radio Rolled Me" though and can actually sing along with it.
EDIT: Ya know I thought about this post and I do have to say I use the term "sing" very loosely.

I was ten years old in 68 on a farm. My mom gave me a transistor radio for my 11th birthday. WNOE top 40 daytime, WWV (I think) Chicago top 40 at night. Dad listened to country, Buck Owens etc. real country. One night, late, I tuned in KAAY Little Rock. I heard Zepplin, Hendrix, Doors, Airplane, Guess Who, Stones, Who etc. There I was a dumb redneck hick country boy on the farm turning on to some of the hardest rock of the day. That is still my favorite genre of music when it comes to secular music. Anybody remember "The Legend of the USS Titantic" from that program? At 2:00a.m. CST Beaker Theatre would replay all those old radio serials like "The Shadow" and others. They even played "War of the Worlds" one night. Sometimes I tune in classic radio on my AM radio just for old times.
Its more fun to be ridin'! I'm still ridin
