Can I drill holes for dash lights in the top tree?

I've been considering drilling 3x holes in the top tree between the handlebar risers to fit the neutral/oil/highbeam indicator lights, I would obviously avoid the structural gussets on the underside. I don't think it should cause a problem because it is only approx 10mm thick where I would drill.
Does anyone see a problem caused by this?

IMHO I would not drill the tree, I have seen some of these break when in a road accident, not exactly the strongest part on a bike.

Seconded... while the top yoke's pretty thick it's only alloy and takes ALL the shock between the front suspension, handlebars, and frame. Putting holes in it will compromise the alloy's strength. SRS made himself a bracket that uses the speedo mounts and sits between the speedo & top yoke, try that.

I'd be a lot more tempted to place them in the head lamp shell like the days of old.

Thanks for the opinions guys , I was tempted to do it but now I think i'll go with one of the other options. Probably a bracket under the speedo. Later I will probably buy one of those speedos withthe lights in the speedo face, but that will have to wait until I get more pocket money!

take the stock headlight bucket off the bike, get some LEDs from Radio shack, drill the bucket, insert the LEDs, et voila! I did a red/greed LED in my headlight bucket for Oil/Neu for about $5 and an hour of my time. This is in a Bonnie:

That looks good, but on the America and speedmaster you cannot see the headlight because of the speedo.

You could make a small angle bracket or something to hold them. Mount it to the bars or maybe one of the holes that holds/held the wire retainer under the tree?

Yes, I think thats my best option for the moment, probably won't look that good but at least I will have thelights for safety reasons. Low oil is the main one.

Hmmm maybe there's like a long narrow metal box you can drill holes in? It'll hold the wiring etc?

I wouldn't drill the holes either although it would look cool. I was going to open up the speedo and at a minimum put the turn signal indicator in it. On my speedmaster indicator lights could be seen on the headligh bucket if mounted low and to either side of the speedo which may look good and make them more user freindly.

Why oh why is there not yet a kit available to move the speedo into the dash for the Speedmaster and America?

wouldn't be too hard to do,just use one of those Drag Specialties mini speedos like the tachs that fit our dash.Have to check correct ratio and figure out cable routing, easier would be an electronic one.

Very nicely done, in both cases. Like I said given how many people have tried this or would want to do it, I'm surprised someone like www.newspeedmaster.com hasn't put all the pieces together and offered it as a kit yet...

I used an acewell speedo, and located that into my center console where my tach used to be, I purchased the acewell model ACE-2802AB-MX, with a universal magnetic pickup that i hooked up to read rearwhell speed. I will try to get some pics tommorow if intrested. here is the web link. http://www.electrosport.com/street/speedometers-series-2700-2800.php

I'd be interested in those pics, and especially a closeup of the magnetic pickup. I just ordered an Acewell speedo and will be setting it up soon.

I think Keith is right about Dave being right that that looks nice. But seriously...I would love to dump my speedo and drop it in the console.

Thank you, I did have to take some wet-dry and sand paper to enlarge the diameter of the hole a little bit to drop the gauge in deeper.

Great job, I've got a reed switch on my front wheel which works great but it looks neater on the rear. Have you fixed a magnet to the disc or is one of your bolts magnetic. Cheers Chris

I fixed a magnet to the disc, It did come with a bolt and magnet, however do to my location I used a larger magnet to maintain the reccomend distance from the pick to read the speed.

Hey, I bought that bike (red/blk. Speedy) from 05 Speedmaster, it's sittin' in my shop, for some reason Kevin took out the speedo the night before I came to pick it up and put the Tach back in, a little loose I might add, yet he gave me the digital speedo and all the wires, MountainMan now has the console to it for his "eyes only project", I had to buy a new one, and BTW, I have found a 90 degree cable adapter in G.B. so that I can mount a mini analog speedo in the dash, the cable has to be extended approx 1 ft. , it's coming along, should be road testing mods by Christmas

Ryk, you had to go out and buy a new console? Dude, that's harsh considering I have your old one!! Sorry things turned out that way!
