Depends on how tough you want the coating.

I hated those graters and took them off the day I got Speedy home. I had every intention of painting them black or getting them powdercoated. I have no idea where they are now. Somewhere in garageland, obviously covered up by another box of stuff that I didn't know I had. I never missed them on the bike, it looks better without them.
Women and cats will do as they please. Men and dogs should just get used to that fact and relax

Definitely rough them up. 220 or 400 grit should do it, so the paint will stick.

They would probably powdercoat nicely. Bet both pieces would be about $25 at your local vendor.

I'm with tmspeedy, I don't like how they look, they are a cheap rip off of the old style air filter. I always feel silly when someone asks me what those chrome thingys are for and I have to tell them they are a cheap stab at riding on the coattails of the classics. But, I am in the proccess of gutting the air box to make room air pods so they have been stored away and will never look at them again, hopefully.

I like the cheese graters. I blacked mine out, and if you have "the freak" the graters actually serve a purpose- they cover the air cleaners. Here is a pretty good pic of them although the bike isn't together all the way.

I really like the graters too. and I get compliments on them from my HD-friends. They just look cool, and make the bike stand out more, me thinks.

Yes, the side cover is covered in leather. It was surprisingly easy to do. Thanks.

Well, I like the graters also. Anything chrome is cool with me! Besides, when I use my traditional English bike for a traditional English picnic in the countryside, complete with wicker basket, I use the graters for my velveeta!

I used Barge contact cement, but the parts that wrap around the edge kept pulling up, so I just used a bunch of super glue. Its been that way for a while now and problems yet.
Tmax (Terry) just took that pic a couple of days ago. My bike is currently sitting in his garage waiting for gaskets and some other small bits needed to finish the big bore install. He installed the freak for me as well, and I think the air cleaners showing through the cheese graters looks pretty cool. I can't wait to get her out on the road!
