Ok It's 2 in the morning here and I can't sleep so having a nightcap....and was thinking about nick names.

It will probably get lost in the translation but...

I don't know if it's a big thing in America, but in the UK and Wales in particular, they tend to give most people a nick name. The reason is that the predominant Welsh surnames are Jones, Thomas, Davies and Evans, and a popular Christian name is Dafydd (David),usually shortened to Dai.

As there tends to be more than one person in the town with the same surname at least, they usually qualify any reference to one of them by his occupation. For example: Thomas the Post (Postman), Evans the Milk (milkman), Jones the Window (window cleaner) etc etc.

Now as window cleaners use a Chamois (pronounced over here as 'Shammy') leather cloths in their trade I heard of a Window cleaner who was called Dai Davies and his nickname was 'Shammy' Davies.

When his son left the army and joined the business he was called.........

yup.............. 'Shammy Davies Junior'

And a bloke with one tooth in the middle of his top gum was called 'Central (h)eating'...

Another guy who was a carpet fitter is known as 'Hall, stairs and landing'

My parents being Welsh and living there had an entry in their phone book for the stables who supplied good manure. He was down as Davies the sh*t !

Anyone else know of appropriate funny nicknames ?

Nick names are very common here too, I have been The Dog forever. From my working in a junkyard and towing etc.. I have a friend we call Cousin Jimmy. When he first came to the area we knew his cousin Mark and he went around introducing him as his cousin Jimmy. So it got so in conversation someone would mention his name and people didn't know who he was then you would say "You know, Cousin Jimmy" and they knew so it eventually just stuck.

An equipment operator I work with is known as "Pug".
When he first came on the job. he worked on the materials plant operating a pug mill. One of the senior operators started calling him "Pug Mill'. It got shortened to Pug, and that's all anyone calls him.

One very rotund truck driver is known as "Biscuit".
Another truck driver who worked with us years ago was called "Tiny". He weighed somewhere around 500 pounds (36 stone).

My current foreman is an old hippie. Sixty years old, gray hair in a ponytail halfway down his back. He's "Woodstock".

Our equipment greaser is a Mexican-American.
He calls everyone Compa. So he's also "Compa".

One of our other mechanics bears a striking resemblance to a certain unnamed historical European leader.
His nickname is "Adolph".

Most of my friends in the town I grew up in were Italian and they are very big on nick names. There was a guy who liked to wear patent leather shoes his name was Jimmy shiny shoes. There was a guy who had a lot of very curly hair we called him Bushel Head.

After i left school and became a despatch rider, the other riders gave me the name Head Banger, because i was a huge KISS fan. That later got shortened to Banger. Then a short time after that the same despatch company put a works football (soccer) team together and being such an Arsenal supporter i then became Banger Rix. Rix after the great Arsenal player Graham Rix.

Over here in the US while i was at the car dealership selling cars i got the name The Crazy Alien. Alien for obvious reasons, i was foreign, and the crazy came because i was always staying up till really late at night watching soccer matches on tv and one sunday i made an 6 hour drive to see KISS on a sunday night then drove home after the show and was at work the next morning.

But truth be known i prefer to be known as The Arsenalfan

Do we have nicknames -
In SW PA everyone has at least one. In the community I grew up in there was a host of odd AKAs. Some of my favorites;
Yuddy
Boots
Rat Cheese
Moots
Boowie
Bing
Lefty (who wasn't)
Spaniard (who was)
Bull
Wink
Rubber Man
Tractor Mike (who actually drove a farm tractor and never had a car)
Fuffer
and my all time favorite - Machine Gun Mike (who didn't have a gun)

I was Dirt, later became Spaz, and now answer to either.

When I was a kid, I was so brilliant my parents called me sun.

Used to know a guy we called Big because he was larger than Tiny. He once had a flat on his dresser. When they came with the truck and started to unload the ramp, he told them not to bother and heaved the bike up over the side of the pickup.

Some interesting names from the bike club I was in,
Snake
Turtle
Roaddirt
and there was a guy we called Will Robinson because he was usually lost in space.

Yep,,nicknames....a blessing or a curse.....had one, "deputy dog" because with my "hick" accent everyone said that is who I sounded like ! worked on the pronunciation and weeded out enough of the accent to pick up a DJ job at area radio station on the over night,,,which a station manager suggested " hey, you're pulling the grave yard shift with...Boot Hill" hence Boot has stuck along with the chuckles from my friends when they sing the Ozzy song "fairies have boots" dang, I hate nick names.

I've known a few interesting ones, beyond the ubiquitous "Mac" for anyone named Mc(Anything) and "Ski" for anybody Polish.
Guy in my old unit named Bighinatti we called "BigNuts", another whose first name was Augustine we called "Saint".
My full last name is Rexilius (Latin name, German family) - me, mom and the older kid get called Rex by everyone at work/school (which is comical when we're all together), but I also got "Ridiculous" from my senior drill who couldn't pronounce it. I've also heard "T-Rex" "Rexinator" "Maximus" "Sillyrex" and 43 other variations. One of the barmaids at my pub in Frankfurt called me "The Last Roman" which I thought was kinda cool.

There's a guy in our pub with a pony tail - Tony the pony.

Another who is the epitome of English dentistry with one good tooth - Juanita (One-eat-a)

And a bloke called Robert who has one leg shorter than the other - Bob up-and-down

And a Consultant I used to work with who had a nervous twitch in his right shoulder - (this is one for the Cricket fans) - we called him "The bowler from the gasworks end"

The Will Robinson reminded me of a guy we called "Joop", for Jupiter. Same reason .

A welder who set himself on fire, twice, was "Toaster" or just "Toast".

Another operator who caught fire (through his own stupidity) and had third degree burns on about twenty percent of his body became "Crispy Critter".

One guy had a missing thumb. He was "Hitchhiker".

We have a "Hogeye".
"Buffy" (he looks for all the world like a bison-buffalo)
"Tuco"
"Twofer"
"Half-a-sandwich"

As I think of more, I'll put 'em up.

There was this one guy I used to work with whose left leg was a few inches shorter than his right, and you could definately notice it when he was standing.

His nickname..."Ten Past Six!" (o'clock)

A mate at school was called Spam ... no one ever found out why - not even him!

Martin Offiah (rugby league) was called Chariots ... Chariots Offiah

My all time fave has to be Alan Lamb (the cricketer).
They obviously called him Lamby (that also tied in nicely because he played alongside Ian Botham nicknamed Beefy).
I heard on telly he also was nicknamed Legga .. geddit, Legga Lamb!

A childhood friend no longer with us nicknamed Boo. When he couldn't get another kid to understand his nickname after several attempts, he said "BOO DA##!T". Needless to say, the longer version stayed with him until he died.

When I got out of the service I went to work fixing office equipment. Turns out that one of the biggest users of overhead transparency makers are tattoo artists (go figure). Some of my customers were:
Booger
Booger's old lady

and my personal favorites:
Mouse & Sh!tty

On a personal note, I have always called my youngest daughter "stubby". Now that she is 5'8" I am starting to call her "stretch".

Nicknames in the fire brigade where I work are more the norm than first names so make sure you don't make any little errors of judgement when you first join cos many of em are like dogs ready to tear you to shreds with less than an endearing one.

In my case all were watching as during one of our drills I had to act as the Station Officer and lead my crew in the truck out of, and then back into the training college with lights and sirens blasing.

Well during the drill I failed to close my front door properly and it happened to open up just as the truck passed the brick wall entrance to the college, giving the door a little momento of my expertise as Boss.

Now everyone's watching aren't they and back in the mess for lunch they're all discussing Stafford's little error.

So of course it wasn't that Stafford had just put a small dent in the door was it? Oh no, it turned out that he had stacked the truck didn't he.

So from that time nearly 21 years ago, everyone refers to me as Stacka

Not bad considering nickname's such as Loser, dork and martha are more the norm

I had an unlce who name was EJ but for some reason all of his neices and nephews call him Uncle Brother. My mom and his other brothers and sisters called him Brother too. Guess tomorrow I will call mom and ask why. Its been over a week since I have talke to my mom and its long over due.
She is still in fairly good shape at 75 but I gues you never know what could happen. So all you out there who mother is still alive and well give her a call.

Too true mate, just heard today that my mother has cancer of the oesophagus and because she is 87 with dementia and Alzheimers they are offering palliative care only.

Luckily my sister has the room and facilities at her house so she can spend her remaining time, about 2 months, with the family. The brother in law has been great about it,and has welcomed her into his home, although he is fighting prostate cancer himself.
